What is the furthest distance that you can travel on consecutively numbered bus routes?

So the rules are that the buses must be consecutively numbered and routes with prefix and suffix letters are not allowed. You can change buses as many times as necessary and you don't have to travel on the entire length of the route. You can also use as many different bus operators as necessary.

So far this is the furthest that i could find:

• 20 - Weston Super Mare to Burnham On Sea
• 21 - Burnham On Sea to Taunton
• 22 - Taunton to Tiverton

Can anyone find a journey any longer than this using consecutively numbered routes only?

Glasgow

1 From Helelnburgh or Balloch to Clydebank
2 . From Clydebank to Scotstoun
3. Scotstoun to Sauchiehall St
4. Sauchiehall St to Victoria Road
5. Victoria road to Battlefield
6 Battlefield to Ek.

You could add the 7 and change to a 8 .

554 Carlisle to Keswick then 555 Keswick to Lancaster is farther than the previous examples.

If prefixes can be ignored: (X)5 Cambridge to Oxford, (S)6 Oxford to Swindon but this is cheating!

Off the top of my head, in London
53 Whitehall to Woolwich
54 Woolwich to Elmers End

but a few years ago it would have been
53 Camden Town to Plumstead Common
54 Plumstead Common to Selsdon Farley Road

In a period from 1958 in London, on Sundays only:
133 S outh Croydon Garage to Archway Station
134 Archway Station to Potters Bar Garage

which is almost as far South and North you could travel on red London buses and TIMEWISE might well compete with other examples on here!

Shame Prefixes are not allowed as:

T1 - Camarthen to Aberystwyth
T2 - Aberystwyth to Dolgellau
T3 - Dolgellau to Wrexham

I have just found an even longer version of the example suggested by JamesRowden which involves a total of 12 bus routes as follows:

• 94 - Bexhill Cowdray Close to Bexhill Wheatsheaf
• 95 - Bexhill Wheatsheaf to Bexhill Stokes House
• 96 - Bexhill Stokes House to Bexhill The Harp
• 97 - Bexhill The Harp to Bexhill Railway Station
• 98 - Bexhill Railway Station to Bexhill Esso Garage
• 99 - Bexhill Esso Garage to Hastings Railway Station
• 100 - Hastings Raiway Station to Ore Graystone Lane
• 101 - Ore Graystone Lane to Rye Railway Station
• 102 - Rye Railway Station to Lydd Camp
• 103 - Lydd Camp to Dymchurch High Street
• 104 - Dymchurch High Street to Hythe Red Lion Square
• 105 - Hythe Red Lion Square to Folkestone Bus Station

I think that this is the longest so far.

If prefixes/suffixes were allowed...

  • X7 - Perth to Aberdeen Union Street
  • 8 - Aberdeen Union Street to Aberdeen Sir Duncan Rice Library
  • 9U - Aberdeen Sir Duncan Rice Library to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary
  • 10 - Aberdeen Royal Infirmary to Inverness
  • 11 Inverness to Inverness Airport
Couldn't give you an exact number but this would be over 200 miles in total.

You could start the day off in Inveralmond (Perth), getting the 4 into the centre then the 5 out to Moncrieffe and the 6 back into central Perth (before you board the X7... )?

There are a few around Edinburgh that are more about “number of consecutive routes on urban services” than “big distances in rural areas”:

  • 1: Easter Road – Broomhouse
  • 2: Broomhouse – South Bridge
  • 3: South Bridge – Haymarket
  • 4: Haymarket – Jewel
  • 5: Jewel – Oxgangs

  • 10: Western Harbour – Tolcross
  • 11: Tolcross – Leith Walk
  • 12: Leith Walk – City Centre
  • 13: City Centre – Leith Walk
  • 14: Leith Walk – City Centre
  • 15 City Centre – Morningside
  • 16: Morningside – Silverknowes

  • 20: Longstone – Gyle
  • 21: Gyle –Leith
  • 22: Leith – Princes Street
  • 23: Princes Street – Livingstone
  • 24: Livingstone – Princes Street
  • 25: Princes Street – Haymarket
  • 26: Haymarket – Tranent
  • (could have continued with the 27 but I doubt that’d beat the distance out to Seaton Sands)

  • 33: Gorebridge – Slateford
  • 34: Slateford – Ocean Terminal
  • 35: Ocean Terminal – Slateford
  • 36: Slateford – City Centre
  • 37: City Centre – Cameron Toll
  • 38: Cameron Toll - Granton

Around Sheffield there’s

  • 71: Sheffield – Chesterfield (evening/Sunday only)
  • 72: Chesterfield – Sheffield
  • 73: Sheffield – Rotherham (evening/Sunday only)
  • 74: Rotherham – Sheffield
  • 75: Sheffield – Shiregreen
  • 76: Shiregreen – Lowedges

  • 1: Batemoor – Sheffield
  • 2: Sheffield – Barnsley

Come the February changes (when the 66 is replaced by the 136) there will be the following:

  • 135: Sheffield – Rotherham Bus Station
  • 136: Rotherham Bus Station - Masbrough
  • 137: Masbrough - Rotherham Bus Station
  • 138: Rotherham Bus Station - Kimberworth
  • 139: Kimberworth - Rotherham Bus Station
  • 140: Rotherham Bus Station - Rotherham Bus Station (circle)
  • 141: Rotherham Bus Station - Rotherham Bus Station (circle)
  • 142: Rotherham Bus Station - Rotherham Bus Station (circle) << but I don’t know if these circles round northern Rotherham are in the spirit of the OP’s question?

Since the OP specified “consecutive” rather than all having to be in the same direction, can I suggest…

  • 51: Clay Cross - Chesterfield
  • 50: Chesterfield – Sheffield City Centre
  • 51: Sheffield City Centre – Broomhill
  • 52: Broomhill – Sheffield City Centre
  • 53: Sheffield City Centre - Mansfield

(the above aren't massively long distance, there are probably some rural services where one route is longer than a list of five that I've given, but it's interesting trying to match routes up - much easier in an urban area where most routes cross each other and services are generally under fifty like is the case in Edinburgh though!)

Is this UK Only? Because if we're allowed to leave the country, and travel to Port Erin, Isle Of Man you can travel quite far by consecutive numbers.

Board Service 2 to Douglas (Prospect Hill).
Board Service 3 to Douglas (Lord Street).
Board Service 4 to Peel (Derby Road).
Board Service 5 to Ramsey Bus Station.

I believe this would cover around 45 Miles.

You could even then return to Douglas on Services 6A or 6C if allowed.

You can get a bit further than this on that - (X)3 Huntingdon to Cambourne, 4 Cambourne to Cambridge, (X)5 Cambridge to Oxford, (S)6 Oxford to Swindon then 7 Swindon to Highworth. This is about 130 miles in total, or 80 miles birds-eye.
