When Stagecoach moved their Chester depot from the city centre to Waverton, 4 miles
Are there other new/relocated depot a fair way from the nearest town/city?

Ribble relocated their Ormskirk depot to Skem - about 6 miles. United closed their Quarrington Hill depot with most operations going to a new depot in Peterlee, 8.5 miles away.

Cumberland closed Whitehaven, moving to Lillyhall (6 miles away)

Arriva Macclesfield depot used to be at the old bus station in centre of Town, the new depot is on the edge of Macclesfield down a country lane around 2 & a half miles from Macc town centre

I often thought means more time for a spare to come to the Bus Station for example or do they sit spares at the Bus Station

Lowland closed Dunbar depot in 1992, following the acquisition of Ian Glass, and moved its main East Lothian base ten miles along the road to the former Glass premises at Haddington. The D depot code was retained for the relocated depot.

Didn't ARRIVA shut down its Alnwick depot and relocate the old 505/515 to Ashington a few years ago, some 25 miles away?

Linlithgow depot closed 2012, with services being based at Larbert (9-11 miles away depending on route used). There seemed to be a lot of empty running initially, but I haven't seen so much more recently.

Surely these are not relocations of the depot but merely relocating operations to another existing garage?

That's the same scenario with Stagecoach. Closed the Crieff Outstation and relocated the ops 17 miles out to Perth.

Yeah but there's loads of examples of depot/outstation closing and the routes being relocated to an existing depot.

What the OP was asking was the relocation of a depot from one place to another location.

When Countywide Travel sold their coaching side to focus on bus operation, they moved 18 miles from Oakley to Crondall to be nearer the town of Fleet where a lot of their routes were centred.

In a similar selling of a coaching side to focus on buses, Countryliner moved around 7.5 miles from Merrow (near Guildford) to Woking. As above, Woking was a hub for their service work so made sense to find a smaller site for the downsizing company nearer Woking.

I know.... the real question is how this affect First, Alex Hornby, Lothian, Greater Manchester franchising, the Verkehrsverbund in the Rhine-Neckar region, any form of contactless travel.... (rolls grenade ;))

Surely that's worse as 5 miles is 8 kms, as 8 is bigger than 5.....

So it makes the relocation sound much bigger, bigger is better if you're after furthest!

Not all services were taken over by Larbert, the 43 was sent to Livingston, who ran it until Stagecoach registered their service...which is now in the hands of Lothian Country.

Kelvin Central Buses closed Old Kilpatrick Depot in the mid to late 90s and moved everything short term to the Strathclyde's Buses depot at Knightswood which is roughly 7 miles east until a new site was set up in Dumbarton which is approx. 12 miles west of Knightswood and 5 miles west of Old Kilpatrick.

First's Cumbernauld depot closing, with operations transferring to Caledonia. Depending on the route taken the distance is between 17 and 22 miles.

That’s not relocating the depot. That’s transferring the operations to another existing depot. If we’re quoting all those examples nationally, it’ll be a long and turgid thread.

Pretty sure Caledonia was built specifically to replace the depots at Larkfield, Cumbernauld and Parkhead so technically it is still relocating these depots even if it wasn't done at the same time. There is no other reason for them building a depot of that size other than to replace existing depots.

Didn’t Cumbernauld close 18 months before Caledonia opened?

Caledonia was definitely designed with replacement of Larkfield and Parkhead in a phased transition.

Cumbernauld is rather stretching a point.

    You're correct.

Caledonia was first used for the Commonwealth Games in 2014. Larkfield then closed and relocated shortly afterwards.

Cumbernauld closed earlier that year or possibly the year before with resources transferred to Larkfield, Parkhead and Blantyre.

Parkhead closed in 2016 and almost everything was relocated to Caledonia except a small portion of work which was moved to Scotstoun.

A better example was the closure of Possilpark Depot in Glasgow around 20 years go. The city routes 18 and 75 were moved to Larkfield and the 8, 54 and 89/90 to Parkhead but the former Kelvin Central routes like the 88 were relocated to a new depot in Kirkintilloch not far from the former site in the town. However the new depot was short lived and everything was moved to Cumbernauld and possibly Knightswood only a year later.

Having double checked, Cumbernauld closed May 2013, with operations being split between Larkfield, Parkhead and Blantyre
Caledonia opened 14th October 2014, with Larkfield closing on 18th October 2014 (all operations moving to Caledonia), Parkhead managed to survive until January 2016, before being closed and operations moving to Caledonia.

Last October I caught a evening 38 Macclesfield to Crewe, but the ticket machine didn't work, so me and the driver had to the depot/outstation to change buses, then drive to Park Green to rejoin the route
