The closure of a railway station is simply the ceasing of services permenantly. That is the choice of whoever owns/operates the railways. My communication from the DafT states that, if so desired, the normal closure procedures could happen.

Just closed the GTR way. Why bother with formalities?

I think the main reason Marine is considered a separate station from Harbour is because it was built later on a diverging route under separate parliamentary powers. Operationally, I understand it was really part of Harbour station and for boat train connections, often worked in conjunction with Harbour's up platform at busy times, the usable section of which was once much longer than today. Marine was always used for rail arrivals while departing boat trains could leave from either Marine or Harbour's up platform.

I wonder if it would be possible to close the station faster, without creating a precedent, by renumbering the Marine platforms as part of Harbour, then closing the platforms.

Marine did used to be numbered sequentially with Harbour - it sole platform being number 3 after the two at Harbour.

Any more substance to this please? Someone said about possible renewal of the level crossing at Newhaven Town. Will this be converted to a MCB with CCTV (controlled from Lewes or Three Bridges ROC) or an OD crossing? Presume the same for those at Newhaven Harbour...

And I just remembered, there's a semaphore down there...

The station has been closed since 2006, for safety reasons.

I know GTR bashing is a great sport but you can’t blame them for something that old Southern did!

    It’s still legally open though.

Not to mention (again) that the reason for the closure, namely the unsafe roof, no longer applies. It's now in pretty much the same situation as Folkestone Harbour, and given how long formal closure took in that case I wouldn't be surprised if Newhaven Marine remains a bizarre anomaly for several years before the official axe falls.

Some trains still terminate at the Marine (empty stock) - useful in times of disruption

As I stated previously I have heard closure could come in CP6 (2019-2024) and would have a freight yard on site for the docks nearby.

AIUI, the old tracks have now been lifted at the Marine and a brand new freight siding laid.

Don't know if this means the end of empty stock turning round there

Guess it depends on the track having 3rd rail?

The turnback siding is scheduled to come back into use on Monday March 11th 2019.

This being the case, how will the 07.03 Newhaven Harbour - Brighton and 18.38 Brighton - Newhaven Harbour operate, from tomorrow until March?

Both of the above services reversed in the Marine platform until the blockade commenced. Have new facilities been installed to reverse these services at the start of the single line section beyond Harbour, towards Seaford?

The sidings are juiced up (but not sure if energised) but the points furthest away from the junction were hand wound last time I looked....

I suspect units would have to reverse via the crossover just before Beach Road crossing and set back at No. 40 signal

My usual morning train is the 06.50 Seaford-Victoria, and when it arrives at Newhaven Harbour, the 313 stock to work the 07.03 is already in the Marine platform, reversing.

So tomorrow, I’ll expect to see the 313 in the Down platform at Harbour as we pass, ready to execute a tight-ish (7 minute) reversal on the Seaford running line, on our coat tails.

In ten years living in the area, I can’t recall a Newhaven turn-back that wasn’t undertaken via Marine. Which isn’t to say it hasn’t happened.

That's correct, there's a new turn back board in place 100m beyond that signal (which is located on the Seaford side of the footbridge)

I think many ( most?) people would use ‘juiced up’ as equivalent to ‘energised’. I guess you may have meant it that a third rail has been installed?

Yes - but don't know if the juice is switched on or not
