Unbelievable how these old locos can still get TLC and come out looking like a brand new engine again.

Do we know what work has been done to these locos? Full overhual or just a wash and brush up.

I have to say 47727 looked very smart at Craigentinny last week

A lot of work, certainly not just a wash/brush up. 727 and 749 have had major overhauls (G Exams) - 749 was done whilst with Colas and 727's G Exam was "almost" finished off by Colas, but completed by HNRC after GBRf acquired it. 739 hasn't had a major recent overhaul, but is having some key components overhauled/replaced. 739/749 will get new liveries in due course too.

I was thinking the same looking at some of the class 37's which it's hard to appreciate these are the same units that rolled out of a factory many decades ago but look brand new.

Where exactly are these 47's going to be used, I'm assuming they won't be coming up to the Highlands? I see we still have our 67 which I thought the 73/9's were replacing but I've lost track of what's happening with them these days after their alternator fix.

It's covered towards the start of this post, but all three 47s have primarily been bought for a new Bombardier stock-move contract due to start back end of this year. 739/749 are currently getting sorted/modified in readiness for this and 47727 is fulfilling the Sleeper support role (that's been done by one of these 47s since Spring last year). Expectation is that 47727 will be involved until the Mk3s/Mk2s are no more (approx. Spring next year) and then will probably join the other two on the stock moves work.

All six 73/9s were finally in Scotland and working over the past few weeks, until the other day when 968 has run down to Loughborough. The 67 is being kept on as there's one 73/9 currently tied up with Mk5 testing/shunting based at Polmadie and evidently there's still ones making the odd trip to Brush, so having the extra loco means there's sufficient capacity (with some contingency) in the diesel fleet.

Thanks for the explanation, I did read through the thread but I'm new to this side of it all so I'm not great at understanding it all yet.

A Class 66 in the new Freightliner livery behind it?

I believe that's 66785 (ex-66132) - it was released from Eastleigh this week: https://flic.kr/p/28T88zk

Ready for next week's railtour or is that in the hands of 47727?

http://www.pathfindertours.co.uk/in...reader/events/the-tess-and-wear-explorer.html

Unsure at the moment - I guess it depends how quickly they can paint it and what condition it's in mechanically. The pics showing it being rubbed down for painting are dated 03/07/18 so it's possible it's currently in the process of being painted now that 66785 has cleared off.

Would be surprised if 47749 was allowed near a railtour after its last performance, so 47727 heading down from Scotland is the only other possiblity I reckon.

Some pictures are now available online to view of 47739's progress down in Eastleigh Works courtesy of Carl Watson.

So all going to plan, we should be seeing 739 out and about very soon, hopefully in either Caley Sleeper or GBRf guises (unless they have something different in mind).

Looks like it could be 47727 AND 47749. The wording on the Pathfinders site suggests there'll be 2 47s involved in the tour:
MOTIVE POWER IS EXPECTED TO BE GBRf CLASS 47 DIESEL LOCOMOTIVES

A few paths are in already:

Monday 09/07/18:
Saturday 14/07/18:
There are paths on Tuesday that may involve 47727 and/or 47749, but I'll put them in a separate post as they're unrelated to the railtour.

Paths on Tuesday 10/07/18 that may involve 47727 and/or 47749:
There's no guarantee that the above paths will run, and the locos I've put against each path are guesses. However, there's no harm in posting them now.

These paths didn't run.

However, a separate VSTP 0L92 to Derby Chaddesden Sidings did run a was both 47727 and 47749. The pair then hauled 20096 and 901 to Barrow Hill on 0Z20 and returned to Derby with 20314 on 0M21.

47749 is now wearing de-branded Colas livery and retains the 'City of Truro' nameplates.

Taken from Gbrf social media today.
Today marks the special unveiling of our two newly repainted Class 47 Locomotives, 47 739 & 47 749 "City of Truro". Repainted by Arlington Fleet Services at Eastleigh, these locos will be moved to Leicester where they will be based specially for GBRf Rail Services.
I believe the pair currently running to Leicester on 0z47
