Grand Central announces suppliers of stock refurbishment

Grand Central announces that it has selected DML (power cars) and Marcroft Engineering/ESG (passenger vehicles) as the suppliers who will undertake the refurbishment work on the Grand Central high speed (125mph) rolling stock.

The power cars will be moved to DML at Plymouth for a comprehensive re-build including reliability modifications, whilst the trailer car work will be undertaken at Toton depot in Nottinghamshire and will include the conversion of all vehicles to HST specification.

Managing Director Ian Yeowart states:

“We are naturally pleased that stock is now moving to works and are confident that our suppliers will deliver stock that is both reliable and comfortable for our passengers.”

Initial stock for service will be formed of 6 passenger vehicles, which will include a first class vehicle, a restaurant/buffet car available to all passengers, and 4 standard class vehicles – a total of 324 seats.

An additional 3 first class and 3 standard class passenger vehicles have been purchased to allow trains to be lengthened to meet future growth. The individual vehicle numbers are:

Does that mean that some of the coaching stock is non-HST Mk3s?

Yes - there aren't any spare HST TF or TS vehicles so they are being converted to HST standard. Another option looked at was converting the power cars to work with Mk. 3a stock.

Does anyone know if this refurbishment work includes replacing the Paxman-Valanta unit for one of those MTU lumps?

I would doubt it.

Werent these just as a stopgap till they can order their own 'new stock'.?

Grand Central don't need the extra power MTU provided (Around 600hp extra per power car) as they are only having 6 Coach Rakes. Should be quite decent acceleration out of Kings Cross!!

43065 and 43084 (both SBXL) were transferred by road from Long Marston to DML Devonport, Plymouth where they are to be resurrected to operational status for use with Grand Central. The other HST power cars from Long Marston for Great Central are to follow in the next few days.
