I'm planning a trip to Dublin next month, I'm going on the Citylink/Ulsterbus service from Buchanan Street.

Am I limited to the booked services, or can I take any bus between Dublin and Belfast? Am I limited to the Ultserbus services or can I take a Bus Eirann operated service between the two cities.

I would like to take the 0500, or 0600 from Dublin to Belfast, then the 1430 (or taxi) to the ferry.

The Dublin-Belfast service is a joint operation, all tickets are valid on both operators. It is a long time since I have seen one of the tickets for through travel to Scotland but AFAIR they do list a specific connecting service. I don't know if it is required to take that connection in the conditions of the ticket or not.

Either way it most likely would not be an issue to take an earlier service, they are not bookable for other ticket types anyway so as long as the route and date are correct you should have no problem as long as you explain you are taking an earlier connection to the driver.

The 05.00 is Ulsterbus operated normally with a Volvo Sunsundegui coach and the 06.00 is Bus Eireann operated most likely with a new double deck VDL coach.

If you are booked through I would say using the coach from Europa rather than taxi, it may cause problems trying to board at the ferry terminal.
