There are some great helpers on here who really know their stuff, but they are going to need more information.
I don't think this will be comprehensive, but to save a bit of time.....
The dates you are traveling and approx.time of day.
Is it just you travelling?
How old are you?
Do you have a rail card of any type?

Advance tickets (i.e. non-flexible tickets that are valid only on the train(s) you specify when booking) generally go on sale (often on a Friday) about 12 weeks ahead of travel, so are currently not generally available for dates after about 16th September.
But looking at outward on 13th September and return on 14th September, offpeak returns (valid for an outward journey on day 1, and return within the month that begins with day 1) would for two people with the TT railcard discount cost £217 in total (if you avoid London) or a couple of pounds more if you want the option of travelling via London.
In contrast, one-way for two adults using Advance tickets with TTRC discount is available for £52.80 (so a total of £105.60 for both of you out and back).
Any train operating company's website will offer the same fares, although there may sometimes be special offers on the website of the train company whose trains you will be using for your journey.
To find possible savings from splitting, try trainsplit.com, but I'd be surprised if you found anything cheaper than £26.40 per person one-way for a journeyof that length.
2 people travelling using a two together rail card
Journey will be early October and it will be a return journey a few weeks later. Times of travel are flexible but prob a Saturday on outward journey and a Friday on return leg.
We will have quite a bit of luggage so I had ruled out flying due to excess charges.
Is it cheaper to split the ticket and what is the best sites to check for tickets available?
Looking for advice on best type of ticket (cheapest) to travel by train from Glasgow to Southampton. I know the dates I am travelling so can book in advance?
Carrying a lot of luggage (although everyone has a different perception of what a lot is) would be potentially be an uncomfortable experience on the train depending on your route.
Have you considered just driving it? Probably the easiest way to shift a lot of luggage. It takes me 5h15m to drive from Oxford to Glasgow, and just over an hour to drive Oxford to Southampton - so probably just over an hour to drive Glasgow to Southampton.
Personally, I'd Flybe it GLA to SOU. £33 each way to upgrade to carry 40Kg of luggage isn't unreasonable.
You could get a Glasgow to London Virgin train starting at £19.80 each, then get a megatrain to Southampton for £1. Would need to change stations in London though. Not the quickest route but could save a little bit of money.
I checked flybe out for dates I had in mind and the cheapest fare was £160 return each for 20kg of luggage + taxis at both ends to/from airports to city centres. Not sure of Southampton taxis but it will be £40+ for taxis in Glasgow so the cost is racking up. Total cost for flying is going to be close to £400
Thanks for the reply.
Excuse my ignorance but what is the mega train and how do you book it?
