hi all. looking to travel from Glasgow to Sheffield this Thursday (one way)

the best option I've found is a direct train from Glasgow to sheff on the 12.51 ex Glasgow. however, it's £49.50 and pretty expensive, plus it's a bit of a long winded route to Sheffield via east coast and in a voyager. i know i'm leaving it short notice but pretty frustrated by lack of advance options for this journey.

what are my cheapest alternatives? don't mind changing, split tickets, changing at warrington etc.

any help would be most appreciated and i'm sure some of the more informed posters here will have a better idea than me.

thanks.

Take a look at this map showing all the routes operated by each TOC:

http://www.projectmapping.co.uk/Resources/TOCs AS v5.7 March 2012.pdf

There are various possible routes, such as:

  • TPE via Manchester, or
  • Scotrail/Northern via Appleby, or
  • East Coast to Doncaster/Retford then Northern to Sheffield, or
  • Virgin to Preston/Wigan/Warrington then NT/TPE/EMT to Sheffield etc.

(and many more possibilities)

split tickets, changing at warrington etc.
Have you tried the MSE split ticket tool? It does have some limitations but can give some ideas. It won't give Advance fares though. You can try your own 'splits' by using any booking site, or you could use brfares.com if you prefer.

It depends on so many factors such as:

  • Whether you have any Railcards or not;
  • Whether you can commit to specific trains (ie Advance tickets) or not;
  • What the earliest time you can depart is;
  • What the latest time you can arrive is;
  • Whether you value your journey time over price, and to what extent (e.g. a saving of £x to save y minutes? This is highly subjective)

If you dont mind a longer journey for a cheaper price then, i can get you to Sheffield for £29.60 leaving at 1040 from Glasgow Central, changing at Carlisle + Leeds travelling via the lovely Settle + Carlisle route, arriving into Sheffield at 1601

Tickets needed :

Standard class advance Glasgow 1040 - Leeds 1437 via Carlisle £21.00.

Leeds - Moorthorpe Anytime Day single any permitted £4.40

Moorthorpe - Sheffield Anytime Day single, not via Doncaster £4.20

Times :

Glasgow 1040 - Carlisle arr 1147 dep 1155 - Leeds arr 1437 dep 1448 - Sheffield arr 1601

( The 1448 stops at Moorthorpe so you are fine to split your tickets there as the trains calls there).

Hope this helps for you.

Or another option is :

1240 Glasgow Central - Preston arr 1456 dep 1510 - Manchester Piccaddily arr 1620 - Sheffield arr 1708

STD Class Advance Glasgow 1240 - Preston 1456 £12.50

Anytime Day Single Preston - Sheffield Only via Stockport £24.40

Shorter journey time, Higher cost.

Best I can find is AP tickets splitting at Lancaster but you are remaining on same train until Preston so no need to get off at Lancaster.

Glasgow Central dep 0940 Lancaster arr 1137 AP @ £19
Lancaster dep 1138 (same train!) Sheffield arr 1408 @ £18 (change at Preston and Manchester Pic)

Total £37

If there is a possibility you may need to return to Glasgow within a month, you may wish to know that Anytime fares are particularly good value on this route.

Glasgow Cen/QSt - Leeds route Appleby
Anytime Day Single £40.30
Anytime Return £50.40

Leeds - Sheffield route Not Via Doncaster
Anytime Day Single £9.80
Anytime Return £12.60

Note that on Thursday EMT will be on strike and only TPE hourly services will run between Manchester and Sheffield and thus very busy! Oh yeh, Northern's Hope Valley stopper still runs every two hours but is slower and often a Pacer.
