If anyone has the diagrams for the extra 2 717s being introduced from next week, I'd really appreciate it if you wouldn't mind posting them, thanks.

I asked GN Twitter this morning where the 717s rosters are. They replied they've been removed due to increasing number of 717s being introduced.

Yeah, over on wnxx someone posted all 5 of the ones that are 717s in service so far. If you want I can copy and paste them onto here. Those diagrams are still accurate, but from next week they just wont be all of them in service. They're not going to be converting them back to 313s are they.

Good to see weekend working starting. How many 717s will operate on Saturdays initially?

Does anyone have the updated diagrams for tomorrow?

Yes, I do. I’ll post them if not beaten by close of traffic tonight.
2 more to enter service from start of traffic tomorrow.

A quick glance shows the empty services outberthed at Letchworth will be started from Hornsey this week, I’s assume as a result of the engineering block between Hitchin - Cambridge late evenings this week.

These workings may be altered at short notice as a result of service disruption or unit faults and failure.
HE54 commences from Wednesday Morning.
Workings may also be altered from next week, as a result of engineering works 5E76 & 5E78 are stabling at Hornsey overnight vice Letchworth due to a block affecting access to the yard.

First go on a 717 today, unexpected but such is the level of disruption elsewhere, the NCL actually worked out my best route from Holborn to Liverpool Street (!)

Impressions as you might expect, like a 700 but worse. The seats are fine enough for the shorter journeys these run compared to Thameslink though the legroom intrusion is still a little frustrating.

Overall though despite the rather sorry state of the route being a bit depressing I found the units themselves a bit disappointing. Heating was set pretty high compared to the A/C on the 700 I took to Finsbury Park, the acceleration was pretty comical at over 30 seconds 0-30 and it took well over 2 minutes to change power at Drayton Park, well in excess of what 700s can achieve at Farringdon.

I appreciate the leisurely pace may be partly to do with the low speed limits on that route but I really feel they could do better. It's not as if 313 acceleration is that bad, 91s are faster pulling out of Kings Cross than that.

I suspect the leisurely pace is down to the fact that the 717s are running to 313 timings at the moment - so until all the 313s go (which also affects how the power changeover happens, IIRC, and I'm sure that was discussed further up this thread), this will be the norm.

I no longer have to do so as often, but after eight years of commuting from FPK to MOG on 313s, I'm really not sorry to see them go - particularly in the sweltering summer heat when they are awful to travel on.

Are the 313 timings particularly slack? I haven't regularly used 313s but 315s are still my local unit and they accelerate considerably faster than this 717 did, particularly in the platform. Once out of the platform acceleration was still very slow but seemed more like you'd expect for a line with a low speed limit. Several stations the train seemed still barely above walking pace by the time all 6 vehicles had cleared the platform.

What you need is a late running train and a driver using the full capabilities of a 717. If anything like a 700 making up time you'll see what they are capable of. A bit like the DLR but up to much higher speeds. Enjoy!

As far as I know 717s only have 50% of the power to weight ratio of a 700 (1200kW for 6 car rather than 3300kW for 8 car), so won't be anywhere near as speedy as that (I do know what you mean) but they should still be better than my experience today :P

New Southgate to Oakleigh Park is a good section to exprenence the class 717 performance. I've been on one that got to 73 mph before the Oakleigh tunnel. They accelerate so much faster than the class 313s.

They are both limited to 30 mph when on DC power.

The 717s can certainly be quite leisurely at the moment but they will earn their keep when trying to make up for lost time during disruption.

I've found getting from 0 up to 20-25 mph there is very little difference in the acceleration between 313 and 717. Where the 717 excels is keeping the acceleration going after 30mph.

cars

The 6 car 717 is only 50% the power of a 12 car 700 as it is only half the size of a 12 car 700. However the 717 power to weight ratio is exactly the same as the class 700 units. The RLU 8 car 700 has 4 power cars and 4 trailer cars. The FLU 12 car 700 has 6 power cars and 6 trailer cars. Like wise the 717 has 3 power cars and 3 trailer cars. The 717 acceleration is better (and smoother) than the 313 when the drivers get the chance to use them to their full potential. Also as mentioned, the 313 and 717 are limited to 30mph on DC in the NCL tunnel.

Are the powered bogies rated the same though? If so, we should update the wiki page but I'm sure I remember hearing from someone that it was correct, likewise 707s are similarly underpowered compared to 700s - less an issue where third rail power is more restricted than overhead of course.

Or viewed the other way, 700s are overpowered compared to nearly all other EMUs, as has also been proposed before. Hasn’t an SWR driver said that 707s are more than capable for their routes?

The traction motors are 211kW but I suspect the Wikivalue quoted (from a Siemens leaflet) is the power draw based on 3rd rail DC draw which is software limited. (At the nice round 1600A, a familiar value...)

707 are under powered in both respects (# motors and motor power) which matters less when only designed to do better than a retraction 455...

So I probably chose the wrong day to try out the 717s. Initially arrived around 11.30 to find all services into Moorgate cancelled due to a person being struck by a train. That problem had been resolved when I returned at 16.30 but many services in the evening peak were cancelled or delayed by a shortage of drivers.

However the 717 diagrams fared better than most with only 2 of the 7 diagrams listed in the thread above being cancelled. One was 313s, leaving the remaining 4 being worked by 717003, 005, 016 and 018.

Just been on a 717 today (sunday). The air con was really nice in this warm weather. It got up to 73mph between Oakleigh Park and New Southgate.

Has anyone got the 717 weekend diagrams?

I think the 717 was replaced with a 313 for some or all of yesterday (Sunday). Certainly from 6pm onwards.

Anybody know why there are so many complaints about the saloon aircon on these units ?

Without fail, there is at least 2 complaints about it on Twitter a day. The Twitter team said the other day the self regulation of the temperature control could be affected by continual opening and closing of doors. That's a serious design oversight if that's the case.

Also curious as to know whether any of the units have had their filters inspected since entry into service. Would love to have seen what they look like after those Moorgate trips.
