Having looked at their website and contacted them, their callcentre didn't know and just repeated the website content. Does anyone know what the hourly rate would be for a qualified PCV Licence holder?

Looking at Riverside, Sunderland or Hexham depots

Is Percy Main still a low cost unit?

I have mentioned this on the thread dedicated to GNE on the forum, they are advertising heavily for drivers but won't say the hourly rate, only the you can earn " up to 20k, including overtime" lord know how many hours you would have to drive to achieve that 20k.

Seems a strange way to try and attract staff, I will leave it to your own imagination as to why they won't give an hourly rate, or even a rough approximation.

I have a good mate who has been there best part of 20 year, top of the tree when it comes to wages and conditions, works out of Gateshead and is on 20k before overtime, but the hours are shocking. It's worth investigating wether they have introduced stuff like remote clock ons and unpaid breaks for new starters, but since they won't give an hourly rate I doubt they will tell you.

I would still say they are better than Arriva and Stagecoach in the North east as an employer.

20k with overtime? Jesus wept.... maybe 10 years ago that might have been attractive to people out of work but now?

I did 2 days overtime last (financial) year and got just under £27k, that's on the new starter rate and conditions too.

20k inc overtime sounds a rubbish rate to me. I can't believe that Stagecoach/Arriva pay less.

It’s £18,300 to £22,500 after training.

What are pay and benefits like?
Once you're fully trained you will earn a basic rate of £18,300 rising to £22,500, plus opportunities for overtime. You will get paid a training rate whilst training.

£9.04 I believe is the current starting rate. I'm under the impression the top rate of £22,500 quoted on the website is after 5 years rather than after training. Most, if not all, depots have a low cost unit, not just Percy Main. Drivers were balloted yesterday on 2% rise, haven't seen the result yet.

Aye, that's where my enquiries ended!

I think Arriva (Northumbria) have a higher top rate, though I'm not sure on starting rate. Stagecoach quote £9.91 starting and £11.89 top rate.

I would be interested as to how many hours in a 40 hour week are driven, are they paid clock to clock and do they have remote clock ons.

I'd have to pass on them ones, I had application packs for all of the big 3 but I think my wife threw them out in case I did anything daft!

From memory, I think Arriva & Stagecoach were both 37 hours and GNE 39 hours a week. Unpaid breaks, don't know if remote sign on has made it this far up yet.

£9.04 is shocking money for the responsibility of the job never mind the hours you have to work. Could stack shelves at ASDA for that or even a bit more and not have all the hassle that comes with bus driving. And the industry wonders why it has a massive problem with recruitment and retention.

I currently work at ASDA (temporarily during Covid) and am on more than that to walk around a store picking people's orders. I was considering looking at GNE jobs; but at that rate I'll stay put!

Think I'll stay where I am, £10/hr working 40 hours over 4 in 7

Shocking when Stagecoach Manchester are paying £12.54 an hour

All the supermarkets pay more. Morrisons are £10 an hour.

Are you able to go back to your old job after Asda?

Never really considered bus driving, find driving stressful/

Bus driving is a doddle with modern buses, after a few weeks you can do it in your sleep.

It's dealing with the public and the management that can be the stressful part.

Companies don't seem able to retain drivers, low wages and terrible hours don't help. I see the govt. has increased the driving hours for HGVs to 5 hours due to driver shortages, because the best way to solve staff shortages is to make conditions worse.

Buses remains 5 1/2 hours. For now.
