Glad you enjoyed it. They will be missed. I've been using them since 1978, plus their sisters, the 507/508s which I've also done a picture blog for. https://paulbigland.blog/2018/11/12/the-twilight-of-the-merseyrail-class-507-508-fleets/

Hopefully GN will run a special charter before they're finally withdrawn.

Did that today - as a farewell , and got one of my "old" NLR units 313123 to Hertford from Moorgate. The latter was in good internal condition , I have to say the others were appalling inside and out - with I suspect - years of embeddeddirt and moss inside (on the windows) - they will be missed , and can still muster a good turn of speed when they can.

I always thought the Merseyrail 507/508 units looked much more modern from the outside compared to the rest of the PEP fleet.

I am sure the 313's will get a good send off - they deserve it. The GN Electrics was a great morale booster when it came in - showing what BR could do. Transformational compared to what was there before.

A good friend did the first GN Electric timetable , local "boy" from North London , and was immensely proud of his efforts. Deservedly.

Shame they are a bit mucky in their last days, - but the 711's I am sure will be welcomed.

IIRC there will still be a small handful of early morning and late evening services running through from and to Stevenage in service, these being units which stable overnight at Letchworth. Sunday also seems to run an all-day service.

The refurbishment in the early 2000s helps with that. I know it doesn't neccessarily take much for "normals" to think a refurbished train is new (see the Northern Unit Refurbishments thread!) but in the case of the Merseyrail units it was understandable. Replacing the headlights probably helped- the Southern 313s feel modern inside but still show their age from the outside.

Rail is working on out of date info, 313043 was stopped in place of 313059.

    That's a bonus, I need 059 (and 035). Still a chance I might clear them all

313050 appears to be the next one to go tomorrow. It’s on 30 road, quite surprised that’s going as it’s a very quick unit to drive & seemed to be in good mechnical condition.

How is it possible to buy items removed from these (or other) units once they are scrapped? Like seats?

I'd be quick then. Two more 717s starting next week so likely that four more 313s will be withdrawn.

As a non-expert, I'm surprised they are being taken singly - is that all each yard can cope with at once or is it down to what the 57 can haul please?

I would imagine its something to do with the couplings between units..I am not sure at all but I would think the unit would be electrically "dead" and unable to couple to another 313 as brake continuity would be compromised. Having driven these units for decades I have only ever hauled another dead 313 at low speeds with another unit, never a loco!
I am probably wrong but it is the only explanation I can think of.

You'd have to contact the breaker directly

Given that they have aluminium bodies, I think they would make blunt razor blades

Presumably there's no through air pipe, so they'd have to be hauled unbraked

It is possible to haul multiples,(example here, not mine) although the units are aux'd off and dragged dead, the loco does get brake continuity and fully controls the braking system on units that it is dragging, air would still continue to pass through the tightlock coupler face between the two multiple units, providing air to the whole formation and if any break away occured the units would react in exactly the same way that any 'in service' train would.

No that wouldn't be allowed. The loco will be able to charge the air up on a 313 but not sure if the 313 would be able to pass on the message to another 313 coupled to it!
