Just saw it go through St Neots, it was tailing at 700 so it passed slow, 313063 seemed to have been vandalised badly.

Seems like these two managed something of a turnout considering the time of day. 313063 was of course the unit which hit the stop blocks at Walton-on-Naze many years ago, sadly Booths will get to do what that stop block didn’t manage to fully achieve. RIP.

As others have mentioned, 063 didn't look her best

With just over half an hour before it's timed start RTT is still showing it as un-activated and FRGT rather than a designation.... makes me wonder if it will run ?

Just been allocated

Which is not the headcode!

Always liked the 313. I Remember them coming through Huntingdon on delivery when I was at school, usually in pairs about 0830 hauled by a 31. First real 'modern' EMU I saw. We even did a couple of trips to WGC just to see them!

I noted the 313s to Newpoet Docks being towed through Gospel Oak yesterday. Great trains in their time..but in a sad condition now. Wont be sorry to see them go.

Is there much in the way of prep done before a tow? Or is it just, couple up, brakes off and away we go? Presumably there some mechanism to drop the pantograph and lift the shoe? I imagine that’s a manual process?

The southern ones are dire
No air con in this heat and no choice of seats. The seats all face one another which encourages people to put feet on seats. The great northern ones have a comfier seat.

Main issue is they are only three coaches. They have now been on the west coastway for nearly a decade
I avoid them. If going to Brighton wait for an ex Southampton even though they stop at a few more stations

When the Southern's 313's were going for overhaul, the shoes were cable tied up, and all MCB's were tripped with the exception for the brake control MCB's IIRC. This enabled the brake continuity wire to still work as a brake continuity wire and the unit's batteries didn't go flat (even though units were aux'd off). I imagine it's the same sort of process for the scrap haulage.

They're old trains. The Seats are fine, they're seats. Alight there's no Airline Seats but really.... Next you'll be moaning there's no 1st Class. No AirCon isn't a new thing on any PEP train its all the same. When they're moving the fresh air is fine. I prefer it! 3 Coaches is a bit short for some services but fine for most off-peak. I agree SN ones probably shouldn't be going to Portsmouth (ex BTN) but then we don't have the stock to replace them.

Are Southern likely to take the odd GN 313 for expansion, cover or spares? or can we safely say all 44 GN examples will be sent straight to scrap?

Even if none of the GN 313s go there, I expect all the parts that still work will be coming off and being used to maintain the remaining Southern units. Should keep them going for longer than they'll remain in service.

Some of the GN 313s weren't in bad shape and had been given various upgrades. I can see that many of the bodyside lights are much brighter on some than others, and the interior lighting was switched to retro-fit LED tubes. I don't know if they'd remain compatible with the Southern units (did they get different light fittings after the refurb?).

I keep hearing about a couple of Units for Christmas Tree's but not heard anything concrete! Spare are needed; especially seeing as a lot of stuff isn't made anymore. SN 313's got LED Lighting Tubes in their DDA Mods.

Hasn’t there already been spares recovery from other similar units that have already been to Eastleigh for that purpose, such as SE 508s and at least one 314?

It would be interesting to know exactly what parts SN might need that could only come off a dual voltage 313?

it's not that the parts would only be acceptable if they came off a DV 313, just that they have them available and can get the specific components required and nothing extra or missing. I remember once there was a door pocket that was destroyed by vandalism, it would have been great to just rob the whole door pocket off an old unit, but because there weren't any available an interesting repair had to be made with ply... I know that Traction motors were in short stock (I think some of the Southern stock of traction motors came from a heritage railway somewhere) but realistically these would probably have to be removed at final disassembly location. Likewise Compressors and Motor-Alternators aren't in massive supply generally. A lot of the stock shortage is simply due to a lack of it in the stock rotation system. Yes a lot of these components are probably shared with other units, but that doesn't make sourcing the components any easier necessarily?

That’s all I was thinking, hence posing it as a question. BR era stock must have loads of common components after all.
