Are there places that a Ride-Height Mod (RHM) unit cannot go that an unmodified one can then? Or are you simply saying that it is difficult to work out which services these particular units are on for anyone wanting to see/ride-on one of them?

Others on this forum can explain better than me but I suspect one of the big issues is that I believe that RHM and non RHM units cannot work in multi with each other in passenger service. Whilst the vast majority of passenger trains in LTV area are now for single units, there are a few trains that are booked for pairs and it only needs one pair in a diagram for fresh arrangements to the diagrams having to be made. I don't know all of the details but I think a lot of late night/early morning positioning ECS trains are pairs and logistically I can easily imagine it is quite difficult to arrange for extra drivers and paths to run these trains independently. It wouldn't be impossible but its a lot of work for someone to organise.

RHM 165s ok anywhere except Henley Branch
RHM 166s ok anywhere except Newbury - Bedwyn (although 221 has been to Bedwyn)
    Neither can run to Banbury.

RHMs coupling to Non-RHMs should be avoided where possible - it can be done but it’s not guaranteed to couple. If needs be we’ll do it at Reading or on depot but won’t plan to do it out in the wild.

The upshot is Reading Depot and LTV Control have to consult closely to make sure RHMs are on suitable diagrams.

North Downs and Basingstokes are more likely to see RHMs, because those diagrams don’t normally see Oxford (and thus risk of ending up on Banburys).

Which begs the question - just what is the difference between the RHM 165 & RHM 166 sets that one can do the Henley Branch and the other cant :?:

The only difference I can think of is the 165s with air-cooling grills on the roof appear to be slightly higher, but appearances can be deceptive and that may not be true. But then again not all RHM 165s have air-cooling fitted so that can't be it?

Update on the Class 165's: Not sure if any of you are aware but 165123 has had its First Class seating replaced with the normal seats (2+2 or 3+2). I saw it around 13:05 on a Newbury Racecourse or Basingstoke service at Reading when a bit of spare time to watch trains.

Thank you for that update. It will be interesting to see what services RHM 165134 works at Reading as I suspect the scope for 2-car diagrams that do not work in multiple with other units during the day, or work west of Aldermaston, or to Banbury, is fairly limiting?

RHM 165s can work to Bedwyn, it’s the 166s that can’t.

Ah, that expands their scope a bit. I thought the RHM 165s had additional restrictions to the RHM 166s, or is that just to Henley - to someone with a very little brain I find it all very confusing!

RHM 166s are barred operating Newbury - Bedwyn.

RHM 165s are barres from operating the Henley branch.

Neither are permitted to work Oxford - Banbury.

I’m sure either me or @FGW_DID will update when that changes.

(I can’t speak for him but it’ll certainly make my job easier, I’ll be shouting it from the rooftops accompanied by a moderate symphony choir)

It’s been to Barnstaple a fair few more than two times, it wasn’t replacing a pacer and none of this is really anything to do with GWR Livery...

Was wondering when 150207 would be sent off. I see it shoved on Portsmouth runs enough!

I wonder if they will/can make any alterations to the seating layout.

Is there any truth in the rumours I've heard that the former First Class areas on the 166s will be removed and replaced by 3+2 seating like on the 2-coach 165s?

    *sigh*
We already do. It's just a bit further back - there haven't been many updates to the list lately as most repaints are now done, and the vast majority of new stock is being delivered in GWR Green from new. I will update the list later this week though.

802019 seen today (20 Nov) with the GWR logo on both yellow nose ends. This is the first IET I have seen adorned thus.

All the IETs will be receiving these in due course as part of a 'sticker upgrade' to resolve a few issues, including:
    • A white stripe above the central marker light on the first class end to help platform staff identify the orientation of the set as it arrives
    • Exterior bicycle symbols
    • Interior 'Quiet Carriage' notices in the DPTS
    and more.
