I have heard that he was given a years wages and has now got a job with Northern Rail in Hull. He will have to travel but if he has a car he will be able to claim travel allowance which he will what ever way he travels. He has had a rough few months but it sounds like he has landed on his feet, good luck to him.

Best of luck to him :D

Are you sure about that? I would love to claim mileage for my commute. I believe that generally(*) you can only get travel allowances if your post is made redundant and you are transferred to another depot.

* Caveat: depending on your grade &/or role travel expenses may be payable in certain circumstances.

There's nothing to stop it being included in the settlement of an individual case, surely?

That is very true.

However, in this case, in my opinion, I would doubt it. I would assume that TP would wish to, rightly or wrongly, wash their hands of this former employee and would therefore not wish to engage in any long, or indeed short, term arrangement with him in regard to the paying of travel expenses.

NT, again in my opinion, would not be liable to pay travel expenses, although that does not preclude them from doing so if they so choose, as they are not responsible for TP's former employee becoming unemployed so to speak. In fact NT can be seen as the "Good Guys" here in offering our erstwhile colleague a new position.

Notwithstanding the above travel expenses could be part of the severance deal but personally I don't see it. In any case if there has been a financial pay off too, then part of that could be put towards travel or relocation costs as appropriate.

Quite. Travel is normally only paid if you are re-located within a company. It would cause all sorts of administrative headaches to pay someone who was employed by another company.

Indeed , I also wouldn't expect TPE to make such an open ended and ongoing commitment like that .

Most they might have offered is a sum of money to assist in relocation which he can then use as he pleases .
