There's a bunch (eight?) of 365s in the sidings north of Northampton station. What are they doing there?

There was a rumour here I believe that LNWR wanted them on the existing 319 services to replace 319s in order to do a internal cascade with their 319s and 350s in the West Midlands.

However it could be that they are just there for storage as Ely is full maybe?

No one seems to know.

It could be a strategic move if there have been discussions with LNwR about taking them on instead of the 319s, or alternatively it could just be a new storage location. Replacing the 319s would make some sense - they’ve proved unreliable plus the 365s have better performance characteristics.

The sooner they are taken back to Hornsey the better as the Thameslink shambles just gets worse and worse.

The sooner people understand the ex GTR 365s are off lease and won't necessarily be returning to GTR the better after all the ROSCO who owns them might have plans for them to be used elsewhere, nobody knows at this stage so saying GTR ought take them back is wishful thinking.

For good or for worse, the 700s are here to stay and there's not much anyone can do about it as the contracts are signed.

Yes they’re off lease, which means they’re available to be leased - potentially at a cheap rate especially if there’s no other takers.

As well as the reliability meltdown, users (even including the queen!) are calling for the old trains back, and the industry should take note of that. In any event displaced 700s, of which there wouldn’t be that many anyway, could quite happily provide extra capacity on metro routes with a little attention to stabling locations and the like.

A reduced core service would likely need a few extra trains anyway depending on what solution was found south of the river. There is no way in a million years the industry is going to be able to continue with the current timetable - reliability is utterly dire even overlooking the driver resourcing shambles. Just look at today as a case in point. The MPs post bags are exploding over this, and eventually the political pressure will be too much to bear. I’ve heard rumours that institutions are now in on this, quite reasonably complaining that their staff cannot get to work reliably. I see LNER are running the special morning service again.

Stored at Northampton to keep them operational for warm storage and to free more space at Ely mainly for more off-lease GWR HST sets.

It seems that a GTR Manager told a public meeting last night that The Queen prefers the 365s.

Be interesting to see if they rustle one up to take her to Kings Lynn at Christmas, instead of the ironing board seated 387 she had to suffer last year.

Replacing the 365’s with 319’s would be a complete waste of time and money. Think of driver training and of course the contract they have with porterbrook to lease the 319’s

Did you mean to write “replacing the 319s with 365s”?

It didn't take Scotrail long to get it done. The amount of staff complaining about the 319s, 365s must be better surely
Yea true. But this is Abellio. It’s taken 6 months to paint the stations in new colours imagine their training schedule.....

37611 was visiting the 365s outside Northampton yesterday. Is this a clue to a further move?

There were 9 Class 365s in the sidings at Northampton opposite the electric depot. I went north from by train Northampton yesterday and they are no longer there. Any body know what happened to them? They do not seem to be in the electric unit depot, although to be fair, views from the train are limited.

Rail Operations Group have Crewe South Yard on log term lease from Network Rail, which they are using for storage of rolling stock, hence the move of the 365s to there.

Perhaps there should be standard advice like in the financial sector.
“Storage locations can go up as well as down (the country). A storage location in a particular area does not guarantee any future use in that or any other area.” :D
