In the current climate, what is the best way to get tickets for Guildford to Burton-upon-Trent for Friday 27 November returning Sunday 29.

My options are great Western Railway to Reading and then Cross Country.

Alternatively South Western Railway to London and then Avanti Euston to Tamworth and Cross Country from Tamworth to Burton-upon-Trent or East Midland Trains St Pancras to Derby and then Cross Country from Derby to Burton-upon-Trent.

The issue I have is that East Midland Trains are now selling advances for the Friday, as I imagine Avanti are doing. However Cross Country are not.

So will I hit a problem whereby all cheap advances sell out and I can't book any because I can't get a reservation for the last part of my journey.

I could use a good site like Train Split but don't they need a reservation in order to display a ticket? I am happy to be tied to perticular trains.

The alternative is to wait until the week before and just travel via Reading. Are Cross Country issuing cheap advanced a week before?

I don't think any of us can reasonably guess what the situation for travel is going to be on over a month's time.

That is fair enough. I am aware they might advise no travel. I was working iout the various options assuming that didn't happen. Whilst of course realising that could still occur. Then it would come down to do I take the risk.

It's a shame different companies have or feel the need to release tickets at different time periods in advance of travel dates. I wonder what the Office of Rail Regulator things of this? Some of the differences are Monday to Friday, when there is unlikely to be engineering works during the day
