Today 158766 ran 2P93 from Exeter to Plymouth and the return on 2E46. I wonder if this could have been part of the training for the train crew?
Almost certainly not .Today 158766 ran 2P93 from Exeter to Plymouth and the return on 2E46. I wonder if this could have been part of the training for the train crew?
There are already regular 158 workings in the SW...Is there any news on when the SW is going to see the start of regular 158 workings e.g. 2C42?
I don't think there is...There are already regular 158 workings in the SW...
There are booked 158 workings in the Southwest already...I don't think there is...
From Wikipedia: "In May 2018 Class 158s will begin running alongside the first completed 'Short set HST' on services between Cardiff, Bristol, Taunton, Exeter, Plymouth and Penzance.
But this doesn't seem to have happened yet and I have heard rumours that the 158s coming to the Barnstaple line is to be sooner now...
Thanks for the information everyone, that last I did hear was that 2C42 on weekdays after the timetable change would be a 2 car 158 so 763 or 766...
That can't be right since the diagram ends at Exeter, not St Phillips Marsh
There are booked 158 workings in the Southwest already...
Can you enlighten us to what these diagrams are?
I don't believe any 158s have been released from Bristol yet.
I have also heard that the 158s to Barnstaple maybe sooner than December nowThey don't have to be to work this job.
The SWR ones at Exeter maybe? I think I’ve seen them at Exeter and they are in the South West as 221129 saidCan you enlighten us to what these diagrams are?

A single 158 works down on the 1340~ arrival from London, attached to a 159, then runs the 1636 to Honiton, then back to Exeter, then the 1740 to Axminster, then goes back ECS to Salilsbury. The SWR ones at Exeter maybe? I think I’ve seen them at Exeter and they are in the South West as 221129 said
Yes I have heard about that and seen it in videos in the past But I was wondering when GWR will will start regular services with 158s south of Exeter and to Barnstaple...There is also a GWR working down on a Saturday evening and back on a Sunday morning.
Thanks for that.A single 158 works down on the 1340~ arrival from London, attached to a 159, then runs the 1636 to Honiton, then back to Exeter, then the 1740 to Axminster, then goes back ECS to Salilsbury.
Seen this today...
As of the May Timetable change the following diagram is booked a 2 car 158.
Mondays to Fridays
2C42 05:24 Bristol Temple Meads to Penzance
2P84 10:51 Penzance to Plymouth
2C47 14:09 Plymouth to Penzance
2E88 16:44 Penzance to Exeter St Davids
2M72 21:49 Exeter St Davids to Bristol Temple Meads
Ah ok yes I thought that would be happening, I take it there is no other news for any other services becoming 158 worked? These are the services that are supposed to be worked as stated by me earlier in the thread...
They're pretty much identical internally. Only difference is that first class is slightly reduced on the 2 car unit, for obvious reasons. Thanks for that.
Now, not knowing much about this sort of thing, is the 158 decor pretty much the same as a 159 inside?
Would you notice any difference between a SWR 159 and 158 on a long run? And also has the 158 come all the way down from Waterloo?
I remember when the rush hour service to Axminster was a 101 or 108 DMU...
In fact, I remember one evening when the diagrammed unit went pop and a pair of 31s (one in banger blue and the other one in original Railfreight) headed off to collect what was left of the Exeter Scratch Set and took two blue and grey mk1s up to Axminster and back instead of a unit.
That must have had pretty impressive acceleration.
To a first glance they are just the same, the main difference is that the 159 has a larger First Class section. There may be some minor differences in seating detailed layout, eg position of tables etc, but 158s form part of longer trains up to 8 or 10 car as far as Salisbury. At least 4 of the 9 available 158s will be on Lymington and Romseys each Weekday, that’s the main reason they are not diagrammed to Exeter very much. Thanks for that.

Has gone back to Bristol on 2D02 this morning and will terminate at SPM tonight so doesn't seem like itPar drivers are supposed to be being trained on 158s at Exeter so don't be surprised if it hangs around for a while
