Devon Metro today looking hideously short formed if JourneyCheck is anything to go by. Probably as a result of losing the 153s with nothing yet to replace them.

They have been replaced with the introduction of 4 more short HSTs last week and a juggle round of units and diagrams and formations.

Will more short HSTs enter traffic from the May 2019 TT change? If so, would it release the 143's to TfW?

More short HSTs will probably enter service as I heard they needed 11 for the May TT change which is why they are putting together some 2+4 slam door sets but the 143s are due to be with GWR until the end of the year so more than likely it would release any remaining 150s from Bristol to be used in Devon and Cornwall...

Also as far as I am aware some of the 143’s are First Group Assets so cannot go to TFW.

I knew they owned some of the HSTs but didn't know they own some of their Pacers
Yeah I think its 143617/618/619 that are owned by First Group which explains why those 3 are the only ones that have had a partially refurbished interior whereas 143603/611/612/620/621 are owned by Porterbrook.

Going to be interesting to see what the Devon Metro will be like now that the 153s have gone.

Was okay on Saturday, at least when I was there. A few short forms but thankfully not on the busiest of the Saturday services.

Edit: I realise they hadn't left yet but I was unlucky enough to miss all the 153s.

What is the matter with a 3 Car Formation (including a 153) being replaced by a 150/0. They have lost their work to short HSTs
I don’t see anything wrong with that. I suspect more 150s will be freed up from Bristol around May time when more 2+4 HSTs enter service.

I take you didn't try travelling the short formed metro from 15:00 then full and wedged on through to Paignton and all the way back to Exmouth.

GWRs Journey Check had 53 Train Formation updates this morning, it's since reduced down to 24 however most of them have been in the Devon Metro area all day. Meanwhile there was short formed HST set failure today to compound the situation further (155+172). Looks like the west fleet will have to work that bit harder!

The reduction is not down to an improvement but 29 trains have completed their journeys since this morning. Shortage of 143s today.

Other than the extra HST 2+4 diagrams introduced last week, of course. Really should not be short forming as there are now more vehicles than before.

They are franchise assets so are owned by GWR, not Group.

Today's short forms have absolutely nothing to do with the 153s heading to Wales. 4 x 143s and 2 x 150s were out of traffic for various reasons, along with a couple problems with the 255/257 west HSTs. With the injection of some of these 2+4 HSTs onto Cardiff-Taunton diagrams, and subsequent displacement of Turbos and therefore 15x further west, there are is actually more slack in the west fleet than for some time.

Let's also not forget that TfW's needs for rolling stock in the Cardiff area are actually quite acute - if GWR can manage for a few more weeks without them, before further Turbos head west (displaced from Bedwyn by IETs), then it's probably sensible overall.

So are more turbos due west in a few weeks then? First I have heard about that...

Noticed that 158763/766 have been appearing a fair bit on the Devon Metro recently. Have they now moved to Exeter?

I don't believe any 158s are officially based at Exeter, although recent extra stock into the West fleet has enabled them to be regular performers west of Taunton once again - there were 4 units working in the Westcountry at various points today.

As a snapshot, today's allocations were:
158763 - N/A
158766 - Devon Metro - Cardiff - Devon Metro
158798 - Pompey/Cardiffs
158950 - Pompey/Cardiffs
158951 - Pompey/Cardiffs
158952 - Malvern/Brighton/Bristol
158953 - Pompey/Cardiffs
158954 - Pompey/Cardiffs
158955 - N/A
158956 - N/A
158957 - Devon Metro
158958 - Cardiff-Paignton-Cardiff-Taunton-Bristol

158959 - Pompey/Cardiffs
158960 - Brighton/Malvern/Weymouth/Bristol

Thanks for that. They do seem to be becoming a common sight around Devon & Cornwall again now.
