Fair enough - tri-source, perhaps? Incidentally, are the diesel exhausts at under-car level? I couldn't see any protruding above the car ends (and the pale grey roofs look pristine still!).
The silencers are below floor level but the exhaust pipe runs up the end bulkhead of the DTCOs. The original setup was out of gauge so it had to be partially redesigned. The largest delay in the flex programme was caused by the queue for test house facilities for the re-qualification of the exhaust system after the modifications.
It seems that the designers have done a good job with the genset installation as reports from Lancashire also indicate that the train under power isn't dominated by engine thrash like a sprinter, - most of the sound is coming from the 30+ year old DC motors. So not much more intrusive than services on an electrified line would be.
I don’t get the demand for consistency in what is effectively branding.
Tri-mode clearly distinguishes the concept - diesel, overhead, third rail are three modes of operation for getting electricity to the motors. Anything else is just confusing.
Are they going to use all the third rail available?
I disagree, - to the average passenger, (i.e. not an informed enthusiast) the train is either diesel, with engine noise, smoke and particulates, or electric - without the former intrusions. I doubt that those familiar with the electric train experience know nor care about pantographs vs shoes.
