According to RTT it looks like there may be two units heading to Gatwick today

Isn't it the same one? There are two trips but the turnaround time at Reading enables then to be the same one.

Only 769943 that’s planned to go out.

769943 appears to be making good time this morning. The ding-ding I heard at Reigate this morning sounds like guard dispatch was being used.

It passed me on the climb to Betchworth and the main sound was the electric motors drowning out the impressively quiet diesel engines. I had to double-check for newly-laid third rail! DSC06715b.jpeg

Just dispatched 769943 from Gatwick at 10:59, running on DC

Bi-mode, dual voltage (Harris also falling into the 'tri-mode' trap)
What the French call “BiBi”: bi-mode, bi-system/voltage.

Or we could go with multi-system electro-diesel.;)

Witnessed 769943 down through Earlswood definitely sounded like it was on DC but given Deepgreen comment above maybe it wasn't.

No, because if that was the case all normal dual voltage stock such as 377/2, 387 or 700 would have to be referred to as bi-mode, and we don’t do that…
Fair enough - tri-source, perhaps? Incidentally, are the diesel exhausts at under-car level? I couldn't see any protruding above the car ends (and the pale grey roofs look pristine still!).

... and that could even be referred to the MKI EMUs that would run under 25kV and 6.25kV. :)

Nope, - as Network Rail doesn't generate it's own electricity for trains then all EMUs are fed ultimately from the National Grid with its array of hydrocarbon and sustainable prime sources.

I don’t get the demand for consistency in what is effectively branding.
Tri-mode clearly distinguishes the concept - diesel, overhead, third rail are three modes of operation for getting electricity to the motors. Anything else is just confusing.
Are they going to use all the third rail available?

Exhaust is up the car ends next to the gangway. If you stop the Redhill video (in post #845) at 43s you can see it on the fourth car of the unit.

The silencers are below floor level but the exhaust pipe runs up the end bulkhead of the DTCOs. The original setup was out of gauge so it had to be partially redesigned. The largest delay in the flex programme was caused by the queue for test house facilities for the re-qualification of the exhaust system after the modifications.
It seems that the designers have done a good job with the genset installation as reports from Lancashire also indicate that the train under power isn't dominated by engine thrash like a sprinter, - most of the sound is coming from the 30+ year old DC motors. So not much more intrusive than services on an electrified line would be.

I disagree, - to the average passenger, (i.e. not an informed enthusiast) the train is either diesel, with engine noise, smoke and particulates, or electric - without the former intrusions. I doubt that those familiar with the electric train experience know nor care about pantographs vs shoes.

Consistency with the established convention prevents this sort of confusion.

OK - 'Tri-means of supplying motors'. Should be catchy enough!;)

Welcome new member. It seems pretty apparent now that it's the shutter speed that causes the LEDs' 'flickering' - out of interest, do you happen to know at what shutter speeds you took these shots?

Following yesterday's seemingly successful trips to Gatwick it looks like there are three paths on Friday, two to Gatwick and one to Redhill.
