57603 failed after departure from Paddington last night on 1C99. DRS hire-in 57306 was sent to assist and double headed the train through to Penzance.

57306 of course didn't have far to go to the rescue. 57603 failed just outside Paddington and 57306 had propelled the set into Paddington so was behind the set already

For those who think our 57s are a pain, my annual post of statistics for the up Cornish Night Riviera is now in the Railways of Cornwall specialist section of the RM Web forum.
Of 307 scheduled services, all ran and only 5 were not 57 hauled and just TWO of those were down to train fault. Derailment, fire and flood were the others ! Not bad going if I may say so.

You may! Compared to a couple of years ago, when there were frequent breakdowns, then even the hire-ins broke down too! (57310 springs to mind I think?), back-to-back hst traction, all sorts!

When eastbound sleeper starts at Plymouth due to engineering work (as it does on Sun 12/2), does anyone know what time boarding starts at Plymouth? (Sorry to highjack the thread, but I though this may be the best place to ask and get a sensible response.)

I couldn't say for definite, but boarding is usually half an hour before departure at Penzance, and the other direction an hour and 15 mins before departure from Paddington. Not sure what the arrangements are at Plymouth. I have looked up 12/2 and I can see it departs Plymouth at 0018 (Mon), but I can't see the inbound empty stock working for it as yet. I'm sure there's someone else here more in the know than I however!

There was a 5Z40 10+26 Old Oak Common to Swindon and 5Z41 13+01 return conveying the Night Riviera Stock. It was hauled in the outward direction by 57603 but was Top and Tailed by another, as yet unidentified Class 57.
I have a hunch but would like further info on this and the 57XXX, and my hunch is would it have been to give 57602 a trial run.

602 been out of action for an awful long time, was it something serious?

Don't know but it was at RVEL Derby for months, came back to OC many months ago and was then waiting a part which took more months and months to come to fruition. Was expected back out in September but has apparently only just re-surfaced.

Do you know when the next 'blues' head up to Wolverton for repaint and refurb?

I think we're still waiting for day coach 12161, and the first slep Refurb? (eager to see pics of the new berths). Sure Paul will confirm. ;)

There is a slim wardrobe on wall opposite bed. More photos on my Flikcr photo stream.

Am I correct to think it has doors? I'll be interested to see how one manoeuvres around the cabin if that is the case!

I'm sorry but I really dislike that. The Brown ceiling, the brown shelf with gold rail which looks like it's come from a discounted 1980s kitchen shop, curvey sink with bin lid next to the pillow, the homebase MDF wardrobe doors, the Wilko style Pillow covers, and the brown bed covers.

All in all, the GWR Refurbishments seem to be doing the opposite of what FGW managed to achieve - They've made the Mk3 Fleet look dated very quickly.

All I can say is that the designers have not listened to staff in all relevant departments or customers....... . Our job will be more difficult and take longer to prep the train. There is space under the bed and there is a separate configuration for seating on the bed. Sliding doors by the way and a fixed ladder. All berths can be made as doubles and note, your head is now facing in opposite direction ! Electronic key control for berth entry and a disabled berth is on its way.
When it gets down to us, it was supposed to stay on depot for a while for on-train staff training before entry into service. I will keep everyone informed of happenings but I'm off for the next week so bear with !

I don't like the look of that "bang your head on it" lamp above the pillow; if I was on that I'd be flexing that as far out of the way as possible and also moving the pillow to the other end of the bed ( unless they've put a shelf at that end like the one that is currently at the basin end on every other Sleeper carriage in the country? ).

Maybe things have changed or maybe it is a trick of the light, but in the pic it does look quite different from what Birley's put on their website all those years ago. They are still there to it compare to!

There have been changes since prototype berth/original pics were done. There may be more yet.... . Sliding door on wardrobe. Yet to see it in the flesh myself yet.

I have to agree. "Premium" isn't a word that came to mind when I first saw those photos.

No sliding door on the wardrobe, standard outward opening.

Nice little seating arrangement on the bottom bunk with a centre armrest and a smart retractable ladder.

Shame the corridor and pantry remain untouched!

Outward opening door ? No more space to make bed especially the top one now the ladder is fixed at one end ! Thought the corridor would be retrimmed and recarpeted at least. Take it no carriage prints either !!
