5 Cars would mean a Class 800 so it wouldn't have started from Plymouth. There are no 5 Car HSTs but there is a 4 still trialing and is confined to one job running between Penzance and Exeter.
Oh alright, thank you. I must've tracked it wrong on RTT. It did have a platform alteration at Paddington, so that's probably where I went wrong.

Help with this please: http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/C48192/2018/06/23/advanced

Tiger showing it as being 5 car but I've tracked it to originate from Plymouth? Is it a short form HST or is it an IET?
The Plymouth service arrived after this service departed. Looking at the Morning arrivals there was a service from Swansea arrived 0830 which departed at 0922 to WOF which could have been a 10 car on arrival and split to form the 0922 and 1122 as the only other arrival and departure was the 1007 to Bedwyn.

As expected previously IET's start working into Devon and Cornwall late next month. Confirmation has come of the workings:-

Monday to Friday from 30th July.

1C04 0730 Paddington - Penzance
1A93 1400 Penzance - Paddington
1C96 2003 Paddington - Plymouth.
2 x Class 802 units.

1A72 0553 Plymouth - Paddington
1C89 1633 Paddington - Exeter St David's
1A98 1955 Exeter St David's - Paddington
2 x Class 802 units.

Saturdays from 4th August.

1C04 0730 Paddington - Penzance
1A91 1400 Penzance - Paddington
1C96 2003 Paddington - Plymouth
2 x Class 802 units.

1A77 0750 Plymouth - Paddington
1C81 1203 Paddington - Penzance
1A35 1740 Penzance - Paddington via Bristol Temple Meads
2 x Class 802 units.

1C83 1233 Paddington - Paignton
1A92 1700 Paignton - Paddington
1 x Class 800.

1C78 1035 Paddington - Paignton
1A88 1450 Paignton - Paddington
1 x class 800.

1C75 0835 Paddington - Paignton
1A84 1308 Paignton - Paddington
1 x Class 800.

(only parts of diagrams shown, no sunday workings west of Taunton).

Be careful about quoting dates off GWR LTP diagrams. GWR work their LTP out in fixed date blocks and then STP forwards or backwards to the required date of introduction.

The first West of England SX diagrams are now due to start on 20th August, five weeks later than planned. The next cl.800 9 car SX diagrams are now starting on 2nd July, a week later than planned. This is due to late delivery of sets.

The main problem at Hereford is that the 9 car unit cannot remain in the platform (it locks up the station) and has to go out of the station to reverse. This has been known about for ages but it busts the drivers PNB arrangements. So the temporary fix of swapping the evening working to become the 1736 Cheltenham will remain until the diagrams are altered.

The information came to me handwritten on a piece of paper with no mention of that so thanks for the update.

Hereford is only an issue if the set is booked to stand in the platform for any length of time, generally while the crew take a PNB. Not all diagrams do this?

Some services head off promptly into the diesel sidings, to shunt back to platform 3 to return towards Worcester, but others, including the 17.22 from Paddington/21.51 return, stable in platform 1 while the crew take a break, hence use of a nine-car on that one being an issue at the moment.

But in the case of the service yesterday, as noted above it had come empty stock from Stoke Gifford depot to Hereford - the Cotswold Line was shut between Hanborough and Oxford for engineering work - and ran to London via Cheltenham, hence the 1Lxx head code, rather than it being a 1Pxx.

Just arrived on platform 3, then stood there for 12 minutes until departure time.

Was that the first use of an 800 on the Newport to Hereford route? I don't remember them being tested there.

Possibly was. Empty HSTs have travelled to and from Hereford this route for years so IETs will have to as well.

No, empty 5 cars have used it to start 5 car passenger services from Hereford

It had a headcode starting with 3 instead of 5 which does indicate a test/driver training run for 9 car 800's on the Maindee East Curve.

No it doesn’t - 3 is routinely used for empty stock services via Abergavenny.

3 is used for a priority empty stock movement, one which is a particularly lengthy journey, or is particularly susceptible to delay causing a late start to its corresponding service train. 3 is to 5, what 1 is to 2, if you see what I mean.

Send them all back to Hitachi for re-cycling into bake bean tins and give us back our tried, tested and trusted HST's - REAL trains that actually work properly and that passengers like.

I seem to remember the HSTs had one or two problems with overheating in their early days. Somebody on another forum said it was due to lack of maintainance of the cooling systems...

They did indeed, among other REAL problems with the HSTs in their early years.

LOL at the immediate attempt to write off the entire IET concept on the basis of one (probably minor) issue. The same logic as writing off a football team based on one bad result. Desperation.
