Hi,

I was recently speaking to a GWR driver who told me about two opening days that GWR are planning, one at Bristol of which I know about, but the other is meant to be at Old Oak Common this year... Anyone know about this?

Regards,
Leo

Hi,

Old Oak Common this year... Anyone know about this?

My Railway club visited last year - interesting Depot to visit if you can. At the time of booking, it was also mentioned the GWR Association had a visit, perhaps they are again this year?

Get in while you can, gets destroyed by HS2 in a few years.

Technically no, because it's Crossrail's depot in a few years time so it's purpose is being changed from GWR to Crossrail maintenance.

Care to pass on any details for the rest of us?

Might be a bit late in the day for tickets unless they are available on the door but here you go anyway:

Crossrail did the real damage, demolishing 'The Factory'. HS2 just finishes the job, but as with Stephenson and Liverpool Road Station in Manchester, one cannot imagine the people responsible complaining - their legacy will be Crossrail and HS2 sharing an enormous station in the area.

Crossrail wont have all of it. They will have a new depot, the rest including the depot for HeX gets obliterated for the new HS2 and GWML station.

As The Planner says, there's a new Crossrail depot to the north east of the current GWR and HEX depots. The latter two will be demolished to make way for the HS2 station.

On a more speculative note; there are various development plans, being formulated by the surrounding local London boroughs, to redevelop the whole OOC area and to build homes, offices and shops on the site.
To make way for this, there's a desire to demolish and relocate the (as yet not finished) Crossrail depot to another location.
Also on their wish list, is the option to close and redevelop the Hitachi depot site for housing.

It would be good to have a steam hauled shuttle service from Paddington over the carriage line like they did on a previous occasion!

Exactly 111 years since opening on 17 March 1906, GWR has today announced Old Oak Common depot will be unlocked for members of the public.

To celebrate its contribution maintaining the Legends of the Great Western, the depot will hold an open day on Saturday 2 September.

On display will be a unique collection of trains and locomotives which have all helped to make the Great Western ‘God’s Wonderful Railway’. Full line up to be announced soon.

During the depot’s 111-year history, the depot and its dedicated, highly skilled staff have maintained everything from steam era Kings and Castles, to the diesel-powered Westerns and Warships.

In 1976 the depot was the maintenance hub in the Western region for the newly introduced High Speeds Trains, the iconic trains which changed the face of Intercity travel in the UK.

While the HST fleet still operates today it is soon to be replaced after over 40 years of service by the Hitachi Intercity Express Train, which will provide another step change in passenger experience.

Tickets will go on sale shortly and demand is expected to be high for this unique event.

All profits will go to the depot’s chosen charity Place2Be, providing mental health support for children and whose patron is the Duchess of Cambridge.

In May 2016 GWR’s St Philips Marsh depot raised over £20,000 for charity with a celebration of 40 years of the High Speed Train.
