This Wednesday I'm going to go from Hale to Bramhall. The obvious route is clearly changing at Stockport, but then it's a connection of over 45 minutes, and sitting on the platform of Stockport sounds supremely dull.

Would it be permissible to stay on the train all the way to Piccadily and then switch to the Bramhall service, or is doubling back in this way not allowed?

I assume it's the Bramhall-Hale return part you're commenting on the length of wait as it's longer in that direction than the other.

You could alight the Stoke-Manchester service at Cheadle Hulme and then pick up the Alderley Edge-Manchester service ten minutes later to do Cheadle Hulme-Stockport, to reduce the amount of time you spent sat around at Stockport.

Failing that, get the train to Stockport and there's the 378 service to Bramhall from the bus station that runs every 20 minutes.
