Were these ever used in Britain? I can only think of American examples. Are there any still about (not on the network I hope)?

I don't know how many used to be about but I remember being on Borth station in the 1970's and one went past with a couple of track guys on it.

Is there not a semi-famous image of the director (or someone else high up) of Railtrack riding on one of these in the aftermath of either Hatfield or Potters Bar once it was clear that they in fact had no idea what the condition of the track they owned was?
