Yes. Trains will slide in poor rail conditions which aren't limited to the autumn leaf fall period. I haven't heard the term "hard slide" before so I guess that is just the way the Driver phrased.

Yes, low adhesion probably caused by the wind blowing leaf litter about. Rail head treatment trains aren't out and about at this time of year so any contamination on the rail head will be there for a while. Driver might have seen the need to report the rail conditions to the signaller before proceeding.

One possible remedy for the railhead at that location would be hand treatment, and cautioning of other trains on approach in the meantime.
