Lot of delays this morning due to trains late off Heaton depot - does anyone know the reason?

Not a good day at all on Teesside, the Darlington-Saltburn line was only just getting back to normal by mid-afternoon when all trains were cancelled again due to a broken down train blocking the line at Grangetown.

Makes you realise how important Heaton is for the north east commuter services.

I remember a similar event at Neville Hill a few years back. Fortunately there is of course depots at Crofton, York, Skipton and Holbeck that helped out in that case. As you say, Heaton is the only one so much more serious implications.

IIRC Neville Hill was the one where a HST powercar derailed on the depot access road out to Leeds station, and that had a massive impact on services. Just about everything from Heaton goes west to Newcastle ECS (Neville Hill too) - even the ECS to Berwick goes to Newcastle first to pick up staff/buffet supplies.

As it is carrying supplies and crew,it often wonders me what stops this being a passenger service

Probably nothing but then again probably very little demand between Newcastle and Berwick that time in the morning.
