And maybe relevant for steam as well - but how do tour operators get people who sign not just "the road" but also "the traction"?

I was thinking if deltics , peaks and westerns were to run on the mainline who would drive?

The specialist TOCs train people on them. The operators are ultimately using their rolling stock. Like Steam Dreams and WCRC.
