As I understand it, Hitachi's plant at Newton Aycliffe will be involved with the construction of a of 175 sets of Class 800/801/802, 64 units of Class 385.

When are these projects due to be completed? and has there been any rumours as to any follow up orders of this or brand new stock?

I noticed that their website alludes to a 'British Bullet Train'. I'm guessing they're positioning themselves early for a potential HS2 stock order?

well I would expect that Siemens, Hitachi, Alstom and possibly CAF would be interested in HS2, I don't think Bombardier do high speed trains

CAF often works with other manufacturers (eg Alstom, Siemens) in joint bids.
And in case memories are short, the reserve bidder for the IEP contract was a consortium of Bombardier and Siemens.

While Newton Aycliffe will assemble (not manufacture) most of the current Hitachi UK orders, some trains will be built at Kasado in Japan, and others in Italy at the ex-AnsaldoBreda site at Pistoia.
Hitachi has the capability to switch assembly between three sites.

I guess Newton Aycliffe has work up to about 2020.
HS2 stock won't be ordered until about 2022 at the earliest.

There's lots of train building work still to go around as once the next cascade sees off the 14x series the next lot of procurement will see the 313, 314, 315, 507, 508 fleets next to be replaced. By the time that's done the 150's and 153's will be nearing the end of their lives followed by the 455's and 317/318. All this at the same time as HS2 construction, ScR HST's replacement, AGA electrics, mk4 second home replacement, then a 156 replacement will be needed around 2030 which may correspond with the 321's ageing. Then there will be the 158/159 followed by the networker fleets into 2040, following that the voyagers and pendolinos will then start to show their age and will also need replacing which will also coincide with the 170's demise and the Circle of life is complete.....

Replacements already procured for majority of 313 and all 315s from Siemens and Bombardier respectively.

Fair enough, good shout. Do Hitachi currently produce any commuter DMU's though?

It's understood only CAF and Stadler were willing to offer new DMUs to Northern bidders. Other manufacturers either couldn't be bothered bidding or had so much work they didn't need to bid to win more.

Bombardier and Siemens will have lots of capacity in 2019 onwards and the new platforms will have been refined a bit after the big EMU orders so they might be temped to offer DMUs again then for big order.

There are still going to be surplus 185 from TPE looking for a home.
Hitachi look busy till 2020.

Plus The new Tube for London, though I assume that will be between Bombardier and Siemens (and maybe Alstom)

There's plenty of work to go round, the important thing is to avoid the order droughts and gluts that have caused chaos to British manufacturing

But 22 x 185s won't go far towards replacing the 137 x class 150s (they might even be used to indirectly replace the remaining 153s) and Patrick McLoughlin has hinted at no new electrification schemes being announced until at least the run up to the next general election.

But 150s won't need replacing for while yet (as that is effectively an issue for the next franchisees post 2022).

185s - That is enough for indirect 153 replacement. Assume Wales and Borders pacer issue is sorted by derogations till SW electrification.

There's no need to announce additional electrification just yet as it won't have any issue on diesel rolling stock orders for a few years (pre XC franchise?). Lots of delivery of rolling stock and electrification required first.

That's what was said about 142s in 2004 when the old Northern franchise was let and a Network Rail RUS had them down as being replaced in the 2009-2014 CP. Then lengthy debates started about whether a new DMU order was required if electrification work was undertaken

He forgot (?) Scotland. TS has plans to increase electrification every year.

The DfT and NR bit off more than they could chew with the amount of electrification they planned for CP5, and it will take most of CP6 to get through the backlog.

Transport Scotland didn't do that and all signs point towards the current EGIP works being completed on time. TS can easily start planning for CP6 knowing that their new schemes will actually be able to happen on time.
