Heaton depot to Tees Yard via the Durham Coast route for a start. That's got to be a good 40 - 50 miles.

When Scarborough had a pilot, the loco travelled from York under its own power. In latter years, an 03 was used due to its higher speed, meaning it could get to/from York quicker. The pilot there would often stay for a long period.

Wasn't there a branch line where the only thing that could fit under a bridge was a 08?

Do you mean the Burry Port and Gwendraeth Valley Railway (spelling??)?

They had to cut down some of the Class 08 shunters in order to get through some of the bridges, I believe.

An 03 has rescued a passenger train at Malton and hauled it to Scarborough (21 miles)

In 1994 a railtour ran from Plymouth up the Gunnislake branch top & tailed by 08645 and 08663.

08s may have possibly run from Carlisle to Workington (or vice versa) their own power - 33 miles.

Not as long as some of the listed journeys - Eastleigh to Clapham!? :o But there are several occasional shunter moves / swaps between Didcot & Hinksey DB yards - in fact, one did a shunt swap reccently.

Im sure there must have been various shunter swaps down in Cornwall too, although looking at some of the state of the 08s down in Cornwall they obviously havent been swapped for a while!

They ran a normal height 08 once too:

Bet the Form 1 made interesting reading.;)

Oh.

Crewe 08s used to go regularly to/from Shrewsbury under their own power (often in pairs).

Crikey they made a racket!

Up until about 5 years ago, Class 08's were regularly swapped between Immingham & Scunthorpe, & the loco's powered themselves between each location, a distance of 23 miles. With a lot of this being on one of the busiest freight networks in the country, it usually happened in the night. These days, 08's get moved by road, sadly, so it's no longer seen.

I've been told it used to happen as well between Boston & Lincoln with Class 03's & possibly Class 08's too, back when Boston & Lincoln had station pilots, of course. That must have been a stagger for the driver!

Er, not quite. They can be towed at up to 45 mph with the coupling rods removed.

And they are often these days moved by road. :(

There are 2 08's at Inverness. 08788 is black and 08308 is the purple/grey one.

Not sure of the mileage but we often used to work an 08 under it's own power from Burton on Trent sidings to Toton, and vice versea. Would often take a whole shift as it was hard to get a path from Clay Mills to Stenson.

Used to quite often take one on its own from Gloucester to Bescot.
Now that made for quite a lengthy turn.

When swapping the Carnforth pilot they used to do Carnforth to Carlisle, 63 miles. Crews used to swap footplates at Shap Summit.

During the 60s, when much of the network was being lifted...

Wouldn't much of the infrastructure lifted with 08&09 stock hauling the equipment vans?

The traction motors also have to be de-meshed, otherwise they'll be spinning 300% faster then they normally do!

Which is the important bit, the coupling rods are removed so they dont suffer from centrifugal force as they are not balanced enough at the higher speed.
