Fancy a West Coast run in the next week or two and Warrington seems to have a good mix of freight and passenger traffic, are the station staff okay with photography on the platforms and are there any good locations outside of the station?

Many Thanks

Station staff are fine, never had a problem.
Head out of the station, straight ahead, then first right, brings you to this, after 3 minutes.

Or turn left out of station, walk over bridge over the end of the station, then go left at the roundabout, go across the level crossing and a footpath to the left takes you to here, 15 minutes walk.

I'm sure others have more locations, seem to be plenty in the area.

Thanks for the info. I presume the directions are from Bank Quay, I was rather unspecific in my question!

Do those trains pass through the station itself as well? I'm specifically hoping to get a 70, not got one in my gallery yet.

From Bank Quay yes.
Some of the coal traffic passes through the station, but not all.
If you are on the station though, and you see the signal go down on the line under, you usually have time to walk to the shot. The train runs around and comes back out here, so you have a good 10 minutes or so.

Bank Quay has been undergoing platform extensions & rebuilding, so until work is complete, you may finds parts of some platforms inaccessible for photography. On the station, the position of the sun in the sky can be a problem for photography of northbound trains from late morning to early afternoon.
