How late can I leave booking an advance ticket (Glasgow-Oban) ?

Is it 24 hours ?

Obviously I understand they may sell out, but when is the theoretical cut-off ?

Depends on the TOC, but nominally 6 pm the day before. Some TOCs, e.g. CrossCountry, allow booking until 2359.

Some TOCs say 1800 the night before, some say 2359. I can probably tell you in about 50 minutes time which it is for Scotrail...
