My first trip out was with my long time mate Kev on Saturday 3/4/21, the plan was to go around Leeds and maybe York. Our plan was to try and get some XC HSTs or 220/1s. But due to X.C. terminating at Wakefield Westgate we only had limited opportunists for this. I was also no the lookout for my last 3, 333s for traction (how can we still call it haulage for units)? Along with a couple of G.C. 180s. I'll on the first use of the station name use its full name and from then the standard three letter abbreviation from then on if that's OK?

The tickets that we were using were first a Northern Complimentary travel pass to Leeds or York and then a West Yorkshire Day saver train (at £8.30 good value).

I'm also going to use my own abbreviations as well. M mouldy. C cop, T traction cop.

Starting off at Barrow (BiF) at 05:49, the day went something like this.

BiF - Carnforth (CNF) 195105 T, a good start to the day will it keep up? Gripped.
CNF - Skipton (SKI) 158907 T, two out of two, Gripped.
SKI - Shipley (SHY) 333016 M, oh well, Gripped.
SHY - Leeds (LDS) 800107 T, back on form, booked seats not gripped.
LDS - Wakefield Westgate (WKF) should have been a XC HST or a 220/1 but running late. Booked seats.
LDS - WKF 800107 M the back up plan, no seats not gripped.
WKF - LDS 800103 M it happens, booked seats not gripped.
LDS - Bradford Interchange (BDI) 195023 C + T this was booked as a pair with 195025 That would have been nice! Gripped.
BDI - Brighouse (BRG) 180103 M the bad bit is that I only have four for traction, booked seats not gripped.
BRG - Huddersfield (HUD) 150273 T will it last? Gripped.
HUD - LDS 802205 M Back to normal, not gripped.
LDS - WKF 221134 T have I got the luck back?
WKF - Wakefield Kirkgate (WKK) 158868 M, but it's quicker than walking. Not gripped.
WKK -BRG 180114 T We got of at the wrong station we were thinking about Halifax, but it was a nice day so we had a picnic on the station. Didn't hear any brass bands (you will have to be in a certain age group to get that). Not gripped.
BRG - Dewsbury (DBY) 158759 M Back to normal. Gripped?
DEW - HUD 185116 M + 117 T not gripped.
HUD - LDS 802216 M not gripped.
This is where Kev and me split up for a while, Kev wanted to see how the OHLE was going on between Leeds and York. I was thinking about going after my 333s but I also wanted to get passed Midland road shed. So my first move was this.
LDS - Castleford (CFD) 158910 M but went passed the shed with the following on. Gripped
70013 M, 70018 M, 66419 C, 70009 M, 70005 C, 68025 M with the TP07? set, 66593 C, 66413 M, 66502 C, Along with some that were at the back of the shed. The one that I'm annoyed at missing was the blue 66 down by the concrete plant.
CFD - LDS 158871 M. Gripped.
LDS - WKF 801208 C + T no seats booked, but just after the train set off the announcement said that this was a dry train (just about to open a can, so put it back in my bag) but no notices or announcements on the station. Also it was mentioned that you had to have a seat reservation. But earlier on in the day both Kev and myself seen a notice from L.N.E.R. recommending to have a seat reservation (should have taken a photo of that). Not gripped.
WKF - LDS 801204 T no seats booked, not gripped.
LDS - Sowerby Bridge (SOW) 158902 M + 784 M. No time to be gripped.
SOW - Hebden Bridge (HBD) 195126 M Not gripped.
HBD - Preston (PRE) 195023 T gripped.
PER - BIF 195133 C + T. The full stop on the day out, my last 19/1 for sight. I'm not going to spend to much time going after them as we should have them aroud here for a bit? But look what happed to the 175s, 185s ?

Did we have a good day YES is the word that I'd use, not to sure about Kev.

I did take this photo of an information screen at Leeds near to platforms 0 - 5 and thought that it would be very helpful.

PS. the seats in the G.C. 180s are about the best that I've travelled on for a while.

Oops, someone has put the wrong web address in that arrival screen

Sounded like it was a good trip to Yorkshire.

Ahh those dud Grand Central units... I only had three out of ten - all from GWR - and was so mad when a dud showed it’s face at Wakefield. I’d been excited about getting more in the book!

I am guessing the "mouldy" is your way of saying something is dud for haulage? :)
Mouldy = bad = no good, that's for sight and traction.
Cop = for sight.
Traction = haulage.

It was a very good day for me with with 17 for sight and 11 for traction.

That's a good total on both. We have threads to list new sightings and haulages on, if you are interested in doing that and haven't found them yet:

I've been thinking about another trip out and it will start something like this.
Bif - Manchester Piccadilly, (Man).
MAN - Sheffield (SHF)
Then onto a Derbyshire Wayfarer Ranger for part of the rest of the day.

The price for the Derbyshire seems to be good at adult £13.40 (you can also have 1 child or a dog on this ticket).
Or a child ticket for £6.70.
The group ticks is very good value at £24.00 (you can have 2 adults and up to 3 kids or 3 dogs)
The senior one is interesting at £6.70,
But no discounts for railcards.

You could always go to Kings Cross as there are about 6 out a day. The only problem is that on some the first stop Doncaster, the other ones are first stop York.
But if you want them?

I have done four plots for the trip out next Saturday (1/5/21) for the Derbyshire wayfarer, the main thing to me is to get to Sheffield A.S.A.P. I would normally go via. Leeds, but the Manchester option is a good bit quicker.
All of the station abbreviations are the ones that the rail company's use. The one that I use will depend on the information that I can get before I get to Sheffield.

After the trip I'll post an update.

Remember you could use the Derbyshire Wayfarer in conjunction with a ticket to Chinley on a fast TPE/EMR service which could save you some time (and reduce time spent on grotbox 150s)

We could but at a cost, as we are using complimentary tickets to Sheffield. But it could be worth getting one from Manchester to Sheffield (advance). Also I'm still after some Northern 150s.

At the moment it looks the trip is off due to the first two trains from Barrow not running, so the first train out is at 07:45, I don't know why, yet.

Derbyshire trip is off, so we're going to Liverpool for a change (not). Hope that I can get my last 507 033 for traction.

My second trip out this year was to Liverpool trying to get my last 507 for traction. Three of us started out from Barrow (BiF) on the reinstated 06:49, then the day went something like this. The tickets the Kev and I were using were Merseyrail Saverway tickets at £5.55 very good value, this ticket can be used on all the main line ToCs that run out of Lime Street apart from Avanti, you can also use them on buses and the ferries.

BiF - Preston (PRE) 195109 T a good start to the day.
PRE - Ormskirk (OMS) 156423 T two out of two, gripped.
OMS - Sandhills (SDL) 507027 M. Now to get the deck chair out for about an hour and half. no sight of 507033. Now back on to the plot.
SDL - Moorfields (MRF) 507020 M.
MRF - Bidston (BID) 507029 M.
BID - Neston (NES) 150237 T. the Saverway ticket runs out at Heswall so a piece is required from Heswall to Neston at £1.25 with a rail card not a lot of expense.
NES - BID 15250 T so two out of two Welsh 150s.
BID - Birkenhead North (BKN) 508111 M two 230s on the shed 007 C & 008 M.
BKN - Hamilton Sq. (BKQ) 508143 M
BKQ - MRF 508124 M If I'd thought about it I could have gone to Liverpool South Parkway (LPY) on Mersey rail.
MRF - Lime St. (LIV) 507032 M
LIV - LPY 175007 M
LPY -LIV 150226 T + 156427 M
LIV - Lea Green (LEG) 802213 T
LEG -LIV 397011 M
LIV - LPY 158810 M + 158799 T
LPY - LIV 158866 T +158858 T That's more like it.
LIV - Newton Le Willows (NLW) 802216 M Back to normal. Gripped.
NLW - Earlestown (ERL) 175116 T
ERL - NLW 175111 M
NLW - LIV 802217 M
LIV - EDG 331018 T +331007 M New shack P1 & P2.
EDG - LIV 319379 T Now for a bit of deck chair work.
LIV - PRE 319381 M. Why do some people think that we all want to know what they were watching on TV last night?
PRE - Lancaster (LAN) 195106 M
LAN - BIF 195129 M

So how did I do 5 cops (1 was a renumber) and 12 for traction. So for a day out in Liverpool a decent day for me. I have to go back soon to try and get 507033 for traction. Then it'll be the 230s and the 777s, so plenty to keep me going there.

Third day out of the year, the Derbyshire Wayfarer not that much to do on it as it's basically Sheffield to Burton on Trent and bits going off to the following, New mills Central, Matlock, Uttoxeter, Long Eaton and Ilkeston. There are some other bits that but not without getting a separate piece for them.

As is normal for most of my trips I'll start off with Kev and we will do what will work out best for each of us. So the day went something like this for me. The normal starting time from BiF 05:49.

BiF - Manchester Pic. (MAN) 195102 M gripped.
MAN - Sheffield (SHF) 185129 + 135 M
SHF - Derby, Derby Is an old shack but the first visit to the new station, I'm not that impressed with it. (DBY) 222008 T first one of the class for traction.
DBY - Burton upon Trent Is also a new shack (BUT) 170398 T getting in the groove
BUT - DBY 220024 T
DBY - BUT 170103 T
BUT - DBY 220005T + 220029 T Gripped first grip on the rover. Also went to the shop across the the street for some drinks £7.90 for 4 pint cans, only went once.
DBY - Long Eaton (LGE) 158813 M First visit in 30+ years, it was the walking route to Toton. Also the first time passed DRC in over 30+ years what a lot of changes. Just out side of LGE a test train passed us T&T with 37612 & 057.
LGE - DBY 170398 M
DBY - BUT 170113 T Will I stay in the groove for a bit?
BUT - DBY 170116 T Starting to look good
DBY - Chesterfield A new shack (CHD) 222101 T 222007 T very good two at a time
CHD - DBY 222011 C + T + 222012 C + T This is getting megger, it can only go down hill now.
DBY - SHF 222005 T Is this my nemesis as it the 13th traction cop?
SHF - Leeds (LDS) 195005 T it's going good.
LDS - Shipley (SHY) 333015 T one of my last three
SHY - Skipton (SKI) 333003 M
SKI - Carnforth (CNF) 158908 M
CNF - BIF 195118 m

Sorry but I cant turn the bold off.

So to follow on my report above. Now I've had chance to go through the videos and rapid shot photos (using a new phone and still trying to get used to it).
So 24 full cops. This does include 10 coaches at DRC or at BUT.
And 15 traction cops.

For a newish area I would have liked more, but it was a good day out, maybe a bit long for some starting at 05:49 and getting home at 22:03.

Fourth trip out this year on 03/07/21 what could possible go wrong? It was the diabolical duo again on a day trip to Birmingham, not a place that we have done a lot. The plan was to get the 04;55 to Manchester Pic. for onwards travel to Stoke on Trent using a Northern delay ticket. Well Northern made a mess of that by stopping the Bif train short at Lancaster with no Northern services south.
So we fell back onto our normal train at 05;49 and just hope.

Bif - Manchester Pic. (MAN) 195104 M
MAN - Wolverhampton (WVH) 220023 T + 221130 T, This was a very luck move for us as our tickets did not start until Stoke-on-Trent, we did explain our problem to the guard and he was quite happy for us to travel on the train.
WVH - Smethwick Galton Bridge (SGB) 350102 T This is starting to look good.
SGB - Stourbridge Junction (SBJ) 172006 + 342 Both C and T Two for the price of one.
SBJ _ SBJ 139001 M But you just have to do it.

Got to go out will post some more soon.

Picked up 68011 for sight at SBJ
SBJ - Kidderminster (KID) 172345 C + T Now lets see if things are going to take off.
KID - Droitwich Spa (DTW) New shack lots of old G.W.R. signals 172217 T +007 C +T It's starting to look good
DTW - Bromsgrove (BMV) New shack no sole to it just functionality 170513 C + T packed (but it was about 11:30)
BMV - Longbridge (LOB) New shack very odd to have about half of one platform out of use and build an extension at the other end of it. 323213 + 214 both for T
LOB - Barnt Green (BTG) New shack, what a hovel 4 platforms P1 stunk of dead fish, one two line train indicator that's not that easy to locate, hope that this is my first and last visit. Got a nice view of a XC hst going towards BMV (43303 +285) 323201 + 206 both for T
BTG - New St. (BHM) Due to a cock up I end up on the same pair of units 323206 + 201
BHM - Moor St. (BMO) just a short 5 min. walk
BMO - Lemington Spa (LMS) New shack. I do like its short form LMS when it was a GWR prestige station, but this is what we had gone down for a 68 on a silver set 68013 C + T
LMS - BMO 168326 + 002 both for C + T Can this keep up?
BMO - Solihull (SOL) 168112 +113 just 113 for C + T
SOL - SGB 17233 C + T also copped two trams 24 & 36
SGB - BHM 158834 C + T & 158830 T, still doing well
BHM - WVH 170508 T & 170535 C + T
WVH - Crewe (CRE) 350124 406 both for T
CRE - Man. Oxford Road (MCO) 319361 M, first grip of the day for me, second for Kev, apart from going through barriers at BHM and BMO.
This is when the brown stuff starts to hit the fan.
MCO - MAN 769431 T
The train that we should have got from Man - Preston (PRE) was stopped at MCO not too much to worry about as there's a BIF service about 15 minutes behind it, we do now have a problem as the BIF train was stopped at PRE on its way out. So on to the platform supervisor ( a very helpful chap) and then a Northern supervisor who did not mince her words about covid and self isolation, we explained that if the BIF train was held at PRE for about 10 minutes all of the Barrow line passengers would be able to get it. Then our new train came in.
MAN - PRE 331006 +001 M. Copped a tram on our way out of Man 3014
All is going well and running to time until Ribble bridge where we get held thoughts' of brown stuff in our heads and having a good natter to the guard. Checking on RTT we see that our train is in P1 (it should have been in 4 or 5) the one that the train that we're on should be going into. So we check to see about P2 and see that its empty and start to see a cross platform transfer. But no Preston power box let the Barrow go and let the Blackpool into P1. We did think about going for a pint but it was tipping it down, so we just had an hour and a half to kill.
PRE - BIF 156479 M, We did learn a new football song it goes like this "It's -----------------. After an hour and a half it p----s you off.

So how did I do for the day?
Cops 31, including my last Pendo, two CH 68s, some track M/Cs and coaches. Must not forget my 3 trams as well.
Traction, 25, this was over what I expected, Kev got about two under me. So we were well happy with the result.
Miles 465 and 1 chain. Along with some new track from Yarnfield junction to Little Bridgeford junction, and just to got the other side in Searchlight Lane junction to where it joins the old slow line.

I would do this move again at the cost of the ticket at £19 for me and £28.80 for Kev. Now just to wait for the Northern delay tickets to turn up.

I see Northern are still "putting passengers first" with sending out the starting short Barrow train from Preston before a connecting train from Manchester can arrive.

Probably like staff at Cardiff Central announcing that a XC was starting at Newport just as the doors of the only train passengers could catch to connect with the XC closed.

Normal for Preston power box to just not be bothered about an on time Norther train and hold it for a 30 minute late running Avanti train when you can have a Northern service running about 10 minutes behind it.

It was the fantastic fours tur to go out last Saturday (Ian, Bob, Kev and Me) not a big day out just to Ravenglass to play on the small trains, due to the restrictions that were in place not the sort of day we normally do.
Going up on the big railway 156421 M.
Going over the bridge to the loco works and my first cop of the day Black Prince from R.H.& D.R.
IMG_3493 - Copy.JPG
Then it was onto the station and some nose bag, I had a steak pie, but after what two of the others were saying I think that I should have got the breakfast pie.

Onto the first bit of winning traction. Katie, one of the oldest working 15" gauge steam locos in the world.
IMG_3504 - Copy.JPG IMG_3506 - Copy.JPG

Back to Ravenglass for my next bit of winning traction. Perkins, normal only used on P.W. trains.
IMG_3507 - Copy.JPG

When we got to Dalegarth (the closest station to Scarfell Pike) it was a bit of fun due to the number of locos and the number of run round roads. So we ended up with this two locos on the one line, not something you see that often.
IMG_3509 - Copy.JPG

Then it was a bit of hand shunting, and then an ECS move to get the next train in.
IMG_3510 - Copy a.JPG

That gave me time to get this shot of Esk and the Lake District hill in and a very good eating house in the photo, (it also serves real ale as well).
IMG_3511 - Copy (2).JPG

For the last round trip of the day we had Cyril, this loco normally only works as the Ravenglass shunter. The engine is a 20hp two cylinder that would be better in a dumper truck on a building site, it was megger!!!
IMG_3517 - Copy.JPG

Then it was a quick pint in the Ratty Arms, and home on 156485 M.

The cost was about the same as the last trip but to help the railway it was worth it. We also did just under 100 miles.

Sixth day out for some of us starting on 10/8/21 for a change Rick has joined us, now what to do on the day. I'm thinking about Manchester, Liverpool and maybe Chester. The ticket that we have is a Northwest 4 in 8 rover, £55.40 with a rail card or £83.90 without but for the area that you cover it's not that bad a price.

Must go and have my tea, I'll be back soon.

Well here I go with all of the totals.
Cops 56
Traction 40
Miles 1610 : 24 chains.

I'm very pleased with the number of cops (more than expected).

I'm happy with the traction (I could have got more if I'd done more short leaps like Lancaster - Preston or Preston - Wigan). But I get feed up doing them.

If I have got my maths correct that works out at about 3.5p per mile.
So very good value.

I did not set out with a clear plan of what traction I was going after apart from Pendos and Voyagers (Voms) and towards the end of the ticket, the T.P.E. 68 working out of Man Pic. to Leeds and the return to Man Vic. it then works E.C.S. to Longsight via Man Pic.
As is normal for us we split up at Lancaster or Preston.

Day one started out much like any other from Barrow in Furness (BIF).
BIF - Manchester Pic. (Man) 195111M gripped. Also spotted my penultimate 397003.
Man - Stockport (SPT) 150135 + 146 both for T, starting to look good.
SPT - MAN 390157 T first pendo in the book for the day.
MAN - Manchester Oxford Road (MCO) 175010 M
MCO - MAN 397006 T The two MCO moves were just fill in moves but one turned out to be a winner.
MAN - Dewsbury (DEW) 802205 M but a good run going passed one of my old stomping grounds Guide Bridge for the 76s.
DEW - MAN 185101 + 124 T x 2 This is the way to do it two at a time. Gripped.
MAN - Liverpool Lime Street (LIV) 802210 M Gripped.
LIV - Chester (CTR) 158839 C + T gripped.
CTR - Shotton (SHT) 158836 C + T +158831 T New shack sort of for these two platforms I've done the top platforms a good number of times.
SHT - CTR 175106 T a couple of 153s working the Crewe shuttle.
CTR - Warrington Bank Quay (WBQ) 175006 T busy but seats available Gripped.
WBQ - Preston (PRE) 221102 +105 T x 2 while waiting for my train there was a pair of 325s in p 1 (sets 11 C & 12).
PRE - Lancaster (LAN) 390046 T While waiting at Preston I also picked up two more 325s 003 & 009 both for sight. Also 45562 (AKA 45699) came through.

IMG_3537.JPG

LAN - BIF 156480 M my last chariot of the day.
The weather was dry all day so that was good.
So how did I do for the day?
Cops 16
Traction 14
Miles 348 : 8 chains

The second day out on my 4 in 8 rover for a change I decided to go up the coast as it has no time restrictions on it so a nice early start of 05;58. The coast line is an interesting line to travel on going north on the R/H side you have the Lake District hills and on the L/H side the Irish sea. I tend to sit on the sea side of the train. After Maryport I don't tend to think that there's a lot to see until you get just out side of Carlisle and on the R/H side you have the remains of Currock shed and on the L/H side part of the Carlisle goods loops. As normal for me I'm starting from my home station Barrow in Furness (BIF)

BIF - Carlisle (CAR) 156464 T gripped. On the way into Carlisle an interesting sight awaited me 37610, 9801, 72631, 977997, 9523 & 37116, then in to the station to see this, the staycation express.

LAN - Preston (PRE) on 195108 T my third to last 195 for traction.
PRE - CAR 390138 T gripped. Then onto a place that I had not been to for ?? years. Annan. It's not on the Northwest 4 in 8 map but it is valid.
CAR - Annan (ANN) 156508 T got a bit of a surprise at Kingmoor a snowplough from Inverness 965243 winner. The wind had got up a lot at Annan and I was surprised by how much the platforms had been lengthened.
ANN - CAR 156506 T gripped, a winner on logs going south 70801.
CAR - Wigan North-western (WGN) 390138 M A good pie shop about 10 minutes walk up the Hill passed the Moon Under Water (best thing to do with that pub).
WGN - LAN 397004 M Seen my last 397002 at Lancaster when I arrived.
LAN - Carnforth (CAF) 195128 T I'm getting close now, can I do a bit more today?
CNF - BIF 195108 M win some lose some. but I have more days to play out.

The weather was good on the whole, dry with some wind.

I decided not to go out on the Saturday and try and get some brownie point back from the wife, did it work??
I think that Kev went over Leeds way for XC stuff and also some GR stuff. Rick he could have gone anywhere.

My next day out on my 4 in 8 rover started much as any day from Barrow in Furness (BIF). Apart from thinking that I would go after 769s, how long would that last?
BIF - Wigan north western (WGN) 195106 M gripped something interesting to see just outside Carnforth F231 ( a loco) and some sort of track machine along with 66784.
Wigan Wallgate (WGW) - Salford Crescent (SLD) 156425 +459 T x2
SLD - Hindley (HIN) 769450 T on diesel and electric not sure as the old number. Gripped. Hindley looks to be a nice station that's looked after.

HID - Manchester Oxford Road (MCO) 769458 T on Diesel and electric.
MCO - WGN 195132 T Gripped. Penultimate 195 for traction, I should have it on my train home tonight but we all know about the random unit generator that Northern has. I went to the pie shop (Gilesbie's not sure of the spelling) got a meat pie, lot's of flavour and filling. I will be going back for more.
WGN - Warrington Bank Quay (WBQ) 390047 T Gripped, not much to say about this trip.
WBQ - Helsby (HSB) 175003 T This train was packed due to issues before it, I think that it could have been a Holyhead service. I got on in the vestibule just behind the drivers cab. It was friendly with six of us and a bike. I did find out about some interesting things along the line like some good real ale pubs.

HSB - WBQ 175011 T gripped but nothing to say.
WBQ - WGN 39005 T.
WGN - Liverpool Lime Street (LIV) 331024 + 009 M I did this move for the next move onwards.
LIV - Carlisle (CAR) 397002 T my penultimate 397 so I wanted to get a few miles in it. Gripped.
CAR - Lancaster (LAN) 390136 T nothing much to say.
LAN - BIF 195132 M But did I know that it would still have been on this? Gripped.

It's time for the last day of the 4 in 8,
This day was going to be the big one, lets see how it pans out. I started out from Barrow in Furness.
BIF - Preston (PRE) 195112 M Gripped about normal on the Furness line. I did see one of the Doc. yellow trains at Preston 43290(new number) ,975984, 975814, 977993, 977994, 977995 (W) 43299. Then along came a ECS move involving the Caledonian sleeper the loco was 92033, I did not get al of the stock but this is what I did, 15002, 15211, 15203, 15213, 15311.
PRE - Stockport (SPT) 331003 + 026 M
SPT - Wigan Wallgate (WGW) 769450 M
WGW - Bolton (BOL) 769442 T Diesel only.
BOL - Hindley (HIN) 769434 T diesel only.
HIN - Stockport (SPT) 769431 T diesel & electric, gripped. This train was running late and had problems at Levenshulme I did think of baling, but thought why.
SPT - Manchester Piccadilly (MAN) 221135 + 021 T x 2 then it was a bit of deck chairing at MAN.
MAN - Leeds (LDS) for 68020 M Gripped. but an interesting run using the through line at Dewsbury and also see some of the new piling work that's going
on.
LDS - Manchester Victoria (MCV) 68024 M but a new set of stock TP05, we got gripped same ticket man.
MCV - Wigan North Western (WGN) 153324 + 158905 T x 2 gripped.
WGN -PRE 221109 +117 T + M
PRE - Lancaster (LAN) 390003 M
LAN - BIF 195123 M.

The weather was good for most of the day.
So how did the day go?
Cops 18
Traction 8

Miles 347 : 56 chains.
