HST Brake Controllers

Hi guys,

I took a picture of a HST cab (picture attached) at Plymouth yesterday, with the controller facing backwards) and have a seen a few pictures in books and magazines, and I've never been able to tell which way the brake controller works.

Are the brakes applied when the controller is facing towards or away from, the nose of the loco?

Answers gratefully received, and yeah yeah, I do know this is a bit of a funny question
