Express and Star, 2010:

The Health and Safety Executive is furious that councillors gave permission for the £40 million four-block student village without informing it, despite potentially explosive gas cylinders being stored at Carvers building merchants nearby.

Wolverhampton City Council has been criticised by a High Court judge for failing to alert the Health and Safety Executive before giving the go-ahead for new flats for hundreds of students near a potentially hazardous gas storage depot.

Carvers Building Supplies in Wolverhampton was devastated by a huge blaze this afternoon.

Buildings were evacuated, roads closed and trains stopped after flames engulfed the 115-year-old firm.

Enormous plumes of smoke and 20ft flames could be seen for miles around as firefighters were drafted in from across the region.

Wolverhampton Today:

The University of Wolverhampton has confirmed that Victoria Halls has been evacuated following the blaze at Carvers and they are advising students and staff to stay indoors.

This, my friends, is why planning laws and "Health and Safety" are important.

Nice pic, actually:

(although planning laws can be got round using a bribe (S106 agreement))

Oh how my local paper likes to over react

But today the HSE launched an appeal to try to stop the fourth block being built, warning a fire at Carvers could lead to an inferno of “thermal radiation, flash fires, vapour cloud explosions and missiles”.
