Does anybody know where I could get timings for the Ealing Broadway-Hull tour by Hertfordshire? Planned route is MML-Toton-Shirebrook-Doncaster-Knottingley-Snaith-Goole-Hull High Level-Hull Paragon-Doncaster avoiders-Rotherham-Sheffield and return. Traction is thought to be 47.

Any help anybody?

I doubt if that any timings exist for this tour yet, maybe later in the week or early next week. Some trips don't seem to be getting finished until around 5 days before at the moment - the Pathfinder Sandblower wasn't complete until the Tuesday before the trip.

I'll post the times on here when I receive them from a mate of mine who works for First Capital Connect. I'm on the tour so naturally I'm interested!

It would appear timings for this trip have now been done, as the confirmed timings for pick up/set down points are now on the HRT website. These are:

Ealing Broadway depart 07:30 arrive back 21:28
St Albans City (for M25) depart 08:04 arrive back 20:37
Bedford Midland depart 08:43 arrive back 19:56
Leicester depart 09:43 arrive back 18:45

I received the tickets through today but it says it's run by EWS. Argh! I thought HRT were owned by FMRail so was expecting a spoon for haulage...

FM Rail do own HRT but as its an enthusiast tour, perhaps they are using EWS for some different traction? Or could it be a driver route knowldege issue?

At the moment a shed has been suggested but the timings seem to suggest a 67 in my opinion. I shall post if I hear anything else tonight. Will you be photographing it Jordy?

I've been told that 66093 will probably feature on the tour - not sure if this is by itself or on top and tail mode with another 66 or a 67.

I arrived very late having been held up in that darn Hull City traffic! Only got to the station about 14:30 and went promptly to platform 7 to get a photograph. Not sure if you saw me, I'm only 15 and was wearing a green coat so i stood out a bit really!

Sorry Max...not sure if i did see you. Did you see 66099 near the Walton Street crossing today?(Sunday). It was there nearly all day with some ballast trucks.

I need to ask, was this tour as good as expected? It looked amazingly promising, but did those who were on it think it was worthwhile? Those of us on the SB generally didn't think our tour was worth the money, so I'm interested in seeing the general opinion here!

I didn't see that no! And I went down that way earlier as well so I should have spotted it. The crossings have been closed all day today, any idea what they have been doing? They are supposed to open again at 7am tomorrow but who knows if they will - I'm not fancying the bus ride tomorrow at all

In response to the tour, from what I heard from some of the people I was talking to, it proved to be an excellent tour, obviously covering several freight only lines, and some lines which are hardly used at all by anything thesedays. Apparently the train took a good battering from some trees on the curve between the Hull High Level Line and Walton St Jct! If I had lived down south I would certainly have said it was value for money :)

I can't see why anybody who booked on it wouldn't think it worthwhile - after all, it did everything that was advertised and ran pretty much to time. For the scratch brigade there were probably a couple of new engines in the book, which weren't advertised so providing a bonus.

I can't understand your comment about the Sandblower and not being worth the money. It did all that was advertised track wise and loco wise, and was on time. You got exactly what was advertised and chose to pay your money for so I can't see any cause for complaint apart from the dodgy lights. Tours which are worth compaining about are those which don't do what they should, or collapse big-style. I've been on tours like this, such as one which was booked to cover 3 branches and ended up missing 2 of them and only going halfway up the other. Another occasion I paid to go to Pwllheli and ended up in Blackpool....

In my opinion it was worth every penny. The best bit for me was the loop that goes past Boothferry Park stadium where the platforms were still in situ.

Hi Max ..not quite sure exactly what they're doing at Walton Street...i know they're doing something to the barriers to stop them failing as often as they do....I think the Hull Daily Mail may have mentioned new rails being laid.As for Richard's comment re going past Boothferry Park....reminds me of the 80's (about 83/84) when i used to meet my mates in town and then go to Paragon to catch the special to boothferry Halt ...we used to think we were hard cos the City Psychos sometimes were on the same train!!!!! Lastly....went to the Hull Model Railway Show today at Costello Stadium...very impressive.

Ah yes, the ones in Cottingham are just as bad, especially in the winter and in the extreme heat (they actually appear to have a rather narrow range of temperature in which they work properly!). I didn't get chance to go to the model rail show, and Costello isn't particularly easy for me to get to. It was better when they used to have it at City Hall in my opinion.

I've always wanted to do that line around Bootferry Park! If only the tour's last calling point wasn't as far away as Leicester! Oh well, I'm sure there will be another tour by that route in the future :)

It was more the fact the locos provided were very boring, with no thrash about really whatsoever. The lengthy wait in Ely Up Goods Loop was totally wasting time. Middleton Towers was such a waste of time too, the highlight of the trip before we did it turned out to be one of the dullest bits of the day. The other highlight of the trip then was to be the 60. That was extremely dull, with thrash being all but non-existant.

Mind you, the other highlights (bashing a 92 and Wembley EUFOC) were definately worthwhile, however these were just salt in the wounds really. The wounds being of course the dullness of the rest of the trip. Still, it's been done, I won't need to do it again. Enjoying a bash behind a 92, I didn't expect that, what with being a diesel fan! Mind you, if you sampled it you would be hard pushed not to enjoy it! I just hope my next tour (the Airean Raider) is more enjoyable overall than the SB!

I'm puzzled as to why you actually booked on this tour then! Shock horror, no thrash out of advertised GM 1990s motive power, I must complain..... ;) I'd suggest you look at the motive power before booking on a tour in future if thrash is what you're after.

I knew not to expect thrash from the 66s, that was obvious. The 57/0 and 60 were expected to be monsters, instead they crawled along for most of the runs we had with them leaving me so bored I fell asleep! Cue many photos of my having gone to sleep...But then I was extremely tired too...

I guess it's more nit-picking with the SB, but I wasn't as impressed as I thought I would be. 92003 though, MONSTEROUS! I've changed my mind about electrics though, if I ever get on another tour with a 92, I'll be loving it. I'll never forget the cheer in Coach B as we went through Ipswich Tunnel as the power was hit. Much like a controlled football crowd cheering at their team scoring a goal in a long, relatively boring game!

Personally I quite liked the Sandblower!
Traction wise well;
66068; YAWN
60034; Yawn
57012; Hellfire!
92003; Dreadful!
66066; Bit of a flyer!

Of course remember Jules we couldn't hear any 60 thrash cos we were in coach B which was towards the rear of the train, and you can't really hear that much from what.. 10 coaches away?

The Veg sign, me calling out to those lasses at Cambridge, bellowing at every station along the North London line, paying homage to Homerton, the interesting experience of Dolphin Junction in a mk2b, 92003 and 57012 bombing along the GE and Bury St Edmunds line all made the trip worthwhile even though the Middleton Towers stagger, 66068 and 60034 up to King's Lynn were sh!te.

My next tour will be a good one.. 40145 to Salisbury with Kestrel 8) then after that its the Airean Raider featuring my 117-ton baby 50049 Defiance and overrated 50031 Hood.
