Hunslet Austerity tanks/J94s - oval buffers

I know that a thread on Austerity modifications could be an endless can of worms (and I don't mind if it goes that way really!) but I just wondered why some Hunslet Austerity tanks ended up with oval buffers. Were these the ones that were bought by the LNER and classified as J94s, was it a different owner or is it just totally random?
