As some may know, the RPSI are planning to operate a railtour in October featuring the first advertised working of multiple 071 class locomotives on IÉ metals since their introduction. 071 and 073 (both in heritage liveries) are currently in Inchicore, their ability to talk to each other being sussed out so that all's ready to roll come October.

While multiple working of large GM locos is not unheard of in the UK, in Ireland this is something quite special indeed!

I remember an 071 and one of it's NI cousins in multi on a tour years ago, the performance was little short of astonishing...

Is this just being done for the RPSI tour or is there a long term plan to use 071s in multiple where needed, possibly for heavy freight trains should there be a growth in the freight sector? There are the 201s but a double 071 may work out better for some flows?

AFAIK it's a one off.

I remember hearing about that NIR double back in the mid-90's. There was also the NIR 201 pair in multiple that ended up twisting the drawhooks on all the coaches
