Sometimes I wonder whether my internet hates me

I went onto Julians fotopic site to check out his njew pics but I could only see some one them:

I have no idea why I can't view them but it is the same with all fotopic sites, I notice that the images I can't view on Julians site are all 1600x1200.

Any help is gratefully recieved.

I think it might be to do with slow loading times on fotopic as this happens to me sometimes where i might get the top row of pics then the rest load a few seconds later. Otherwise i have no idea!

You have some form of banner ad blocking. Disable it.

BTW the internet isn't yours.

Well it was only a figure of speech, I know the internet isn't mine but the connection I have to the internet is playing up: is that better?

This problem has been happening for about a month, I have no idea why.

Yep but you still said it was your connection, but it wasn't ;)

Anyway here's my top 5 most annoying statements made by users:

1. "The internet is down" (impossible)
2. "The internet is slow" (no, you're just trying to download a huge file and your available bandwidth is such that it is going to take a while to download it)
3. "My internet has crashed" (no, your web browser has crashed)
4. "Newsgroup? huh? oh is that owned by Google Groups?" (No! google just re-brand newsgroups, anyone can do that!)
5. Any statement that claims that the WWW is the only Internet application available, or even that the WWW is the internet.

All of these would be eliminated if people just took 10 minutes to learn the basics of what the internet is. Although I blame the media and poor ICT education for this. I don't blame the teachers themselves, too often schools/colleges appoint people to teach ICT who are not specialists, and some of them know less than the pupils.

And before anyone says I am being pedantic, consider this: would you be frustrated if someone called a class 37 a "multiple unit", or thought Class 455s were the same as 317s? ;)

Worse is when IT teachers use those terms!

People are too mollycoddled by computers - AOL / Windoze / M$IE users, *in general*.

Though Eternal September has now ended ;).

It's also very amusing reading comments on sites such as the BBC - they seem to think the reliability of major computer systems will be that of their desktop mincomputer. Err, no, you do NOT build a national IT system based on M$ Windoze!

hmm, possibility of 86242 saying a TnT 37 a multiple unit ;)

RM... rubbish quality products with such features as not allowing you to dial in unless you're using MS Windoze and M$IE! Which is rather annoying if you've got a load of stuff you need and don't have access to such a machine! RM's security though is very poor from what I've seen *cough*...

Well actually Yorkie, yes, I think you are being a little pedantic. (Well ok, if we're being pedantic here I don't suppose it's possible to be a little pedantic, you either are pedantic or you 're not! :D but I digress.)
Firstly, it's not just the 'uneducated' that use such terms. I could show you plenty of IT professionals who use terms like "the internet's down" when they really just mean (for example) that the proxy server is down or has crashed. (Yes, it does happen Tom, even on Unix systems ;) ). It's just an expression of speech and describes the situation in a simple way that everyone on site can understand. No-one interested enough to care really thinks that they mean it literally.
In the same way someone saying "the internet is slow" really means "my internet connection is slow" and to anyone who doesn't understand the difference between the two statements it probably doesn't matter anyway.
As for point 3, seeing as we're being pedantic, it isn't necessarily your browser that's crashed. In my own case it's far more likely to be my NTL cable modem that needs a kick (sorry reboot)!
Next, as far as most people are concerned these days the World Wide Web and the Internet may just as well be one and the same thing, although of course I accept your point that they aren't.
I just think that Mr and Mrs average just want to use "The Internet" and aren't bothered about the ins and outs of it. To them, if the internet doesn't work then the internet doesn't work whether it's crashed, locked up or disappeared into the ether(net)!

Finally, I don't know about people calling a class 37 a multiple unit but I know those who insist that a class 43 is! Better not go there though eh? ;)

And what's wrong with that? Haven't you heard of "computers for all"? Surely it's good that computers have become simple enough for anyone to use and that you don't have to be a nerd to use them? (God knows, when I think back a few years to the days of manually keying in a bootstrap loader on a DEC PDP11 before being able to load the OS from paper tape.......)

As for your little list, I have just read a detailed report describing how much stronger (security wise) IE7 is than Firefox. If Microsoft making progs more secure is mollycoddlling then that's got to be a good thing in my opinion.

What I think you sometimes forget is that not everyone wants to be a computer nerd like you (and possibly me! :D) They need to be mollycoddled. They just want something they can use easily without having to worry about how it works or the technology behind it.

p.s. You could have a point about AOL though! :D

Now I know there are a lot of people who might not have a clue about machines, and I'm not saying they should all learn advanced C++, but they should at least know a bit about the system. Would you drive a car without knowing where the windscreen wiper button / choke / coolant bottle is?

As for M$IE 7 being more secure than Fx, do you ahve the report URL? Perhaps current levels of known vulnerabilities are lower at presernt, but it's not publically released yet. There are lots of reports saying how Windoze is better than Linux and is cheaper / more secure - lots of them on getthefacts.com .

Choke? I shouldn't think anyone who's learned to drive in the last 10 years would know what a choke is never mind where it is or how to use it! Unless they learnt in an old banger I suppose. Seriously though, I do take your point although I would argue (I do love a good argument debate) that you don't need to know how something works to be able to use it. A radio for instance. You only need to know how to switch it on and off and tune it. That's a world away from knowing how it works.
Having said that I must admit that when I get a problem with the computer that takes ages to sort out I can't help but wonder how someone who is computer illiterate copes. Or perhaps it doesn't happen to them so much because they don't muck about with things the way we might do. In any event there are people in offices all over the country who successfully use computers daily without knowing a thing about how they work.
Looking again at what you said, you are of course correct in that they should know a bit about how they work as it would save the IT department from a lot of 'silly problem' calls but if it's just a tool they use as part of their job, most just aren't interested.

Well I don't want to get into a Windows/Linux IE/Firefox debate but as you say there are lots of reports, some serious ones, that say that Windows is better and more secure and who's to say those reports are wrong? (Apart from you and the rest of the Linux brigade of course :D ) I can't argue with the cheaper bit as I have to agree that Microsoft pricing is - well ...!!!

For myself (and I like to think of myself as being among the computer literate) I'm quite happy using Windows, IE7 and many other MS products and I don't feel particularly insecure. They do the jobs I need to do better that any alternative. And yes, I have tried some. That's not to say I'm a complete MS nut. When I had to choose whether to put my website on a MS server or a Linux/Apache one I chose the latter, and would do so again.

I'll see if I can find that URI but I it might have to wait till I get back to work as I don't remember it off the top of my head.
