Having wanting to work on the railway in some form or another (driver would be preferred role) and having trained up to work in the ICT sector in support, repairing, upgrading and maintaining equipment etc. I was wondering if such a role exists in the Rail industry around stations and offices. Is the ICT infrastructure maintained and looked after by Network Rail or TOC's? Or are they maintained by an external contractor?

The ICT function is definitely in-house at some TOCs - TFW advertised recently for data engineers to manage equipment, routers, firewalls etc, across offices and stations. I imagine even where it's outsourced there'll be some in-house team to some extent.

I must have missed that position or it was to far a commute. I wasn't sure if it was the TOCs as you don't tend to see many roles like that advertised or the role is named differently to what I normally look out for.

If I remember rightly it was based somewhere in South Wales, but travelling over a very large area for work at stations.

That's the sort of role I was thinking of, but based in South Wales would have been to far as I'm based in the North West (Cheshire), but there are loads of hubs around near me such as Liverpool, Manchester and Crewe, but I guess it depends where this type of role is based from.

Quite a few of the IT staff work for the owning group as opposed to individual TOCs (although those roles do exist). I've known several of them in roles I've worked at TOCs who were a mostly decent bunch. There's often a lot in the back rooms at head offices too. The vacancies will come up on the TOCs websites just like anything else.

TPE's head office is Manchester I believe.

Here's a role working for First Travel Solutions in the NW: https://uk.firstgroupcareers.com/va...ns---clayton-business-park/15404/description/

I think I spotted that one from First but upon reading the description it's more of a helpdesk role which isn't something I'm interested in, I'm more hands on and getting out there and repairing or installing equipment. My best best is to regularly check the sites to see if one pops up but they seem to be rare.

I think Network Rail tend to contract out the actual physical maintenance of the equipment away from the lineside. Lineside equipment is more Signalling dept than IT, and can be either contracted or in-house by NR staff.
