I'm confused as to where all the trains fit at night...

You can delete from the lists

ATW (doesn't exist any more)

Gloucester
Manchester Piccadilly
Newport
Swansea
Wrexham

There has been an odd one outbased at some of the locations on a Saturday night because line closures have prevented them from returning to an established location but in the current Timetable they seem to have been eliminated. Birkenhead North can be added to the list. Llandudno Junction (Platform 2) is weekend only.

They can be parked at any odd place in the case of Engineering Work, even Park Jcn for one last year when Ebbw Vale services were running to/from Pye Corner

Swansea does see a 150 stabled on a Saturday night, its dropped off by a 6 car with 4 continuing to Carmarthen and the 2 forming the first Swansea to Manchester on a Sunday morning.

Also, Piccadilly did see a 158 stabled overnight pre-covid. A driver passed up to prep it then it coupled onto the 13:30 departure, the same unit which overnights in Swansea to form a 4 car back. Since covid though it now ends up in Crewe and couples onto.it there on its.way up. Not sure if that will ever return now though.

Many thanks, will duly amend.

Another thing which springs to mind with Northern, Hull Botanic Gardens doesn’t feature. I double checked to ensure I hadn’t missed anything, and it’s not there. Likewise there’s no timetable paths on or off the depot. Does stock booked to stable at Hull go to or from Botanic Gardens on an as required basis? I suspect same may apply to HT and TPE.

I think ScotRail outberth at Helensburgh Central. Whilst not under usual times I have been at the station one weekend when engineering works cut it off from the network and every platform was full of 334's!

As an aside, back in 2010/2011, Oxley depot was either shut or inaccessible and a number of Pendolinos were holed up at Stafford for the night (I arrived to find a set in each of p5, p6 and the Royal Mail platform!)
Pre covid, was a 334 stabled at Helensburgh throughout the day before working a peak service to somewhere in the evening? Seem to remember that, may be wrong.

All this talk of stabling made me look out the old Ian Allan Locoshed and Depot books - these also used to give information on what was stabled at stations etc. overnight or weekends. And how THAT has changed...
This thread made me realise that this isn't the first time since my 1980 book that I actually saw anyone write down in one place where stabling actually occurred for a very long time!

What an interesting thread!

NOTE:- I am more than happy for all this to be collated into a sticky thread, though it would be a bit of an ongoing task to keep it all up to date as things change on a constant basis. There's still GWR, EMR and ScotRail left to go, for which unlike all the listings to date I don't have any official info to work off. I'm happy to have a go from unofficial sources, however I may need some assistance at some of the complex locations. Alternatively if anyone has a set of diagrams or CWNs they are prepared to share by PM this would be gratefully received.

Just for clarity (and my apologies if I've missed an explanation somewhere), I assume these include potential sites for occasional use during engineering works or other emergencies? I can see a few in there which I don't believe have regular timetabled stabling use - Bradford Interchange for one.

Bradford Interchange sees a 195 stabled overnight during the week in Wall Siding adjacent to platform 4.

I’m going off what’s timetabled to be actually used, on one or more nights of the week. So there will be other locations used in emergency / engineering work / midday which aren’t listed.

IIRC Bradford Int is listed as having something stable there. I will double check when I have the paperwork in front of me later.

Thanks for the clarification. I wasn't aware of anything stabling overnight at Bradford Interchange on a regular basis when I worked there, but things may have changed in the last three years. I was also not aware of anything of Northern's stabling at Southport - there certainly wasn't when I was planning the STP unit alterations for their NW area, but that is over a decade ago. The first train out of and last train into Southport ran ECS from/to Wigan Wallgate, where the crews were based. IIRC, the British Open was played at Royal Birkdale during that period, and on one morning when play started very early, the ECS move to Southport was run as an additional passenger service.

One location that was used then for STP purposes was Blackburn station: on occasions when the line over to Preston was shut for overnight engineering works, the last service from Manchester Victoria to Blackburn was stabled in the bay (P3) overnight instead of running ECS to Blackpool North. I can't remember the crewing arrangements, I'm afraid. Obviously this has since been rendered superfluous by the opening of the depot at Blackburn.

I will have a look at the actual diagrams later, however a quick look at RTT shows incoming services at Southport P5 & 6 and Bradford Int P4 with no return working until the morning.

The planning behind all this I have to admit I find quite fascinating, it’s like pieces of a massive jigsaw puzzle fitting together exactly perfectly.

And herewith the final instalment - ScotRail. Again, like with GWR, I have had to put this together from unofficial sources - so additions and corrections are welcome. I have no information for Eurostar, so if anyone wishes to do that then feel free!

BG has a unit every night for an A exam, as units arrive in Hull, as many as time allows go to BG for fuel, then back to the station platforms for stacking up, 15x go in pairs, 170s go single, depending on how many 170s are arriving depends on how many you can get fuelled, its is not possible to fuel every Northern unit, then after the fitters have their break, Hull trains units go up for fuel, nights are interesting at Hull, I enjoy covering them when they are short staffed

TfL Rail also stable in the platforms at Reading when engineering work prevents late / early access to Maidenhead Carriage Sidings. Usually, the last down working from Paddington to Maidenhead runs empty to Reading and works 9P10 0603 Reading to London Paddington the following morning. Two units are sometimes stabled Saturday night / Sunday morning. Usual practice is however six units at Maidenhead overnight.

Okay that’s roughly in line with what I suspected. Presumably same applies at Cleethorpes? Do TPE use Botanic Gardens as well?

Trains are diagrammed to stable in the station (platforms), but will be taken to the depot for fuelling on an as-required basis. No maintenance is done.

Same goes for Scarborough I believe.

TfW do stable overnight in P5 at Shrewsbury. It forms the first service to Cardiff.
For some reason RTT shows an ECS move being completed, but it doesn't and hasn't happened for a while now.

Looking at RTT I assumed that it came off Abbey Foregate attached to the 0518 to Birmingham International

Only if a 185 needs fuel, no maintenance is done, Siemens staff at Hull see to the toilets etc in the platforms at Paragon Station
