Great Northern 365520 running as 1T39 has collided with a Land Rover on Nairns crossing between Cambridge and Ely. Looks as if paramedics and police are just arriving on site but the line will be closed for a while. Another collision in this area :(

Unit being reported as badly damaged and it is unclear if there are any injuries. Thoughts to all involved especially the very shaken driver.

On sky news now http://news.sky.com/story/train-hits-vehicle-on-level-crossing-near-cambridge-10533401
The accident happened at a crossing between Cambridge and Ely and a man in his forties suffered a severe head injury.

He was airlifted to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

It is understood he was in a Land Rover.

An ambulance spokesman said the alarm was raised at 2.34pm on Friday and several vehicles, including an air ambulance attended.
Abellio Great Anglia which operates the line has warned passengers to expect disruption between Cambridge and Ely...

So the Sun has excelled even themselves with images. First is a picture of a random level crossing, standard poor journo fare but the crowning glory, by far, is the use of a WIP reskin of a 375 from Trainsim. Morons.

Hope the chap who has been taken to hospital pulls through. Sounds grim.

The Sun isn't the only rag doing some lousy reporting on this incident. The Evening Standard reports this incident as having occurred on the ECML and that the train involved was operated by Abellio.

A man, aged in his 40s, suffered a life-threatening head injury in the collision involving a Land Rover on the line between Cambridge and Ely this afternoon.

He was airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge for further care.

At this time, it’s not believed that anyone on the train was injured.

The level crossing between Ely and Waterbeach in Cambridgeshire is used by fewer than 10 vehicles each day, Network Rail said, and is “user-worked”.

Spokesman Ross Easton said there are “clear instructions” telling people to phone a signaller, based in Cambridge, to ask for permission to cross.

When they are given the all-clear users manually open the gates and are asked to call the signaller again when they have crossed.

Driver was very badly shaken & for a while nobody had any idea if there where any casualties or distressed people onboard. Thankfully all 115 passengers where ok. At least the Norwich to Cambridge & Birmingham-Stansted services would have had another member of traincrew to assist. Oh how I detest DOO.

Luckily there was another driver travelling on the train who could assist.

Very true, very fortunate. I wholly agree

Whatever TOC you work for, whatever train you board, we welcome each other on this section of line just as it should be. Dreadful incident & hope all ok.
