Not sure if people are going abroad to see innotrans this year but it has been moved to 'Springtime' 2021 now

Mmmm... I was expecting to be working in Japan by that time, but given how things have turned out because of the Pandemic, I might have the opportunity to go and the money to back it up.

Yet again, there's no telling what is going to happen in the next year or so...

Having made a train journey from London to Berlin for this in 2016, it's well worth visiting, but as part of a larger trip. I can also recommend the Buckow Light Railway east of the city, which is running a more limited season from 1 May.

Was actually thinking of going to this (before Covid-19 destroyed everyone's future plans), but it seems they have dropped the "public days" from the event and it is now strictly for transport industry professionals only.

Dear visitors of the InnoTrans Public Days,

with the positive development of the trade fair and the associated growth, especially the integration of the new hall hub27, a public weekend following the trade fair will no longer be held.

Due to a lack of space in the outdoor exhibition area and the associated logistical requirements, it will no longer be possible to carry out the Public Days adequately.

We would like to thank all those who have visited the Public Days for years.

Innotrans have released a fairly forceful statement.

The show was postponed when the Senate of Berlin imposed a ban on staging large events, in particular trade fairs with an attendance of more than 5,000, until 24 October 2020. As a result, it would not be possible to stage InnoTrans as originally planned, from 22 to 25 September 2020.

New dates have now been released and the show WILL go ahead, but at the end of April next year.

Seeing as October 24th is merely the soonest date when large events aren't banned, and not any kind of guarantee, personally I am not so confident, given that will likely by no vaccine or treatment by that point.

It is possible for anybody to buy an industry ticket I believe, it's just that they're €50 (€95 if you buy on the day) instead of the €2 it used to be for the public days. It's a bit steep but you do get to go around all the exhibits and attend any talks, if it floats your boat - all of which were wrapped up by the time of the public days in the past.

Everyone's welcome to InnoTrans, whether you work in the industry or not. The public days, with the € 2 tickets, are really there for the people (read, kids and grown-up kids) who just want to watch the trains on display. The rest of the fair is also interesting, but is not for everyone as it's much more sales oriented.

True, but - and this is arguably more for the aviation industry - you could be there for a protest.

I assume that if you're there to cause trouble, you'll be escorted off the premises.

There are always plenty of enthusiasts an Innotrans. They're usually pretty obvious because they're dressed very casually and carrying a large camera.

One exhibitor said to me he doesn't mind it so long as they don't go round 'hamstering' every lanyard, pen and bottle opener in the exhibition, and don't get in the way of people visiting the stands because they actually want to discuss a potential purchase of a product.

It varies per company. I went to InnoTrans a couple of years ago and when I visited the SNCF booth (which was massive, by the way) they almost immediately offered me drinks and snacks. The French really pulled out all the stops, just look at the stand they had back then :D

I regret not having made business cards when I went to Innotrans. Every single booth I visit immediately asked for my card as soon as I said that I was a Design graduate.

Not going to make that mistake next time. I might already have been employed in the industry...

As a recent Engineering graduate, that's interesting to hear. I'd love the opportunity to work in Germany, so this could be something I ought to bear in mind!

The companies at Innotrans are from all over the world, they are no more likely to be Germany-based than any other country.

If you do want to work in Germany, I would advise you to get a good level of German language skills if you don't have it already. You don't need to be completely fluent, but at least at the level that safety briefings don't have to be repeated in English for your benefit.

I really must put more time into learning German. I love the country and go several times a year. Knowing the shortage of train drivers they have too, it definitely makes it seem quite a tempting career move one day.

Train drivers in Germany don't get paid as well as their UK colleagues though, something to keep in mind.

Definitely but still worth considering if it’s the job itself and not just the financial element that you’re looking for.
