New editions of Arriva timetable booklets (1,2, at least - 4 presumably being held back untill the ORR decides on MIA) have all trains running between 16.00 and 18.30 in the evening peak boxed with a note stating "Off peak-day tickets may not be valid"

Or are they just covering themselves for tickets where fares are set by TfGM, Centro and XC but ATW services can be used?

A bit of a jump tbh. It just means they're advising customers of potentially higher fares if they travel in the early evening.

I don't think national peak restrictions would be a good idea... Why limit trains headed into a metro area, the problem is getting people out of it. Might as well sell a cut price ticket than carry empty air.

ATW are changing the restriction code of off peak day returns/singles to AW on some journeys (although having a quick look at the new fares it appears to be most Off Peak day tickets)

Restriction : AW
OUTWARD TRAVEL

Valid on trains timed to
depart between 0930 - 1600 inc
and from 1830 onwards.

RETURN TRAVEL

Any train the same day except
those timed todepart between
1601 - 1829 inc

Well spotted. Perhaps it will be happening on Northern outside PTE areas before long too. I can see some interesting cases arising when passengers travelling on split tickets are delayed resulting on travel on one of these tickets in the evening peak. It's theoretically possible at the minute with some CrossCountry-priced Off-Peak Day Returns, but looks like this sort of thing is going to get a lot more common.
