This weekend buses replace trains north of Ipswich. For the operating trains between Ipswich and Liverpool Street are some of these due to be operated by "Intercity" hauled sets? It looks like the buses from Norwich connect with the xx:43 from Ipswich on both Saturday and Sunday so possibly these are the hauled sets? Are any other hauled sets operating?

It is a combination of 321's and hauled stock - real time trains site details the planned stock.

Real time trains gives a confused picture for Sunday. The xx:43 departures are timed as 321s but state "reservations available". I don't believe reservations can be set on 321s. I'm not sure if the "timed for" stock is very reliable in this instance.

It is the Timing load that is shown. Just because it may say "Timed as 321" it doesn't mean that a 321 is planned to work it. It can be worked by anything that can maintain those timings.

On the occasions when there has been engineering works south of Norwich I have found the RTT timing loads to be a reasonable guide to whether the service will be loco hauled or units.

As it appears that only one platform will be in use on Sunday at Ipswich then it should be units. It looks like the xx:30 limited stops (Stratford, Colchester and Manningtree) from London will then do the xx:09 all stops to Shenfield on the return. The xx:08 from London calling at all stations from Shenfield will then do the xx:43 limited stops on the way back. Using a hauled set on that basis will be inappropriate.

And a broken clock can be correct twice per day as well. Tell people that RTT is gospel and they will be the ones coming back to shout when they ended up on a unit this Sunday!

Most of the LHCS fleet will spend its weekend at Norwich, if you are travelling between Ipswich and London you are more likely to be on an EMU than a set.

Unlike some Norwich-Ipswich blockades it doesn't look as if any catering will be provided on those trains south from Ipswich. That makes me think there will be a high proportion of 321s in use which require all trolley catering to be double manned in each unit which is why it's not provided normally when EMU substitutions take place. All onboard catering is based in Norwich thus making the whole operation very unsustainable at times like this.

How long will the bus journey take from Ipswich to Norwich?
A hideous amount of time. I usually make a point of commenting that it really makes you appreciate the train to those on the RR.

'Counted place' reservations apply on many services run by 321s.

I travelled London to Norwich last Sunday (also engineering work), and despite my Advance ticket having a seat reservation, there was a 321 waiting at Liverpool Street.

I'd forgotten how appalling 321s are, noisy, miniature bucket seats and a ride like a rollercoaster.

They were using hauled sets on the Ipswich-Liverpool St services when Norwich-Ipswich was blocked a few weekends back.

And even though I am expecting it the 'BANG' of the doors every time you pass another train still makes me jump.

On some but there are never enough of these south of the block to cover the half hourly service. The majority will be taking a long weekend at Crown Point or Norwich.

Just to update on the catering front. It looks as if selected trains will have a buffet. Some staff are sharing drivers taxis rather than using the RR.

I had the same experience on bank holiday Monday. The coach to Norwich was non-stop but still took over an hour.

I came back via Cambridge!

Compare that to 32mins on the Ni90 services & makes us really see what a superb rail service we have between the two. Being a Saturday the traffic will be quite heavy getting into Norwich at times.

In case your lift turns up early the 08.30 from Liverpool St is a class 90, and the one circuit you possibly won't see, the 09.00 from Liverpool St is 2 x 321.

Does anyone have any observations on trains in use today?

It will only be 07:43 from Ipswich and 23:30 from London as Hauled sets if RTT is correct today. As a previous poster said A fast down will be forming the slow train back and vice versa so will all be Class 321s today. Hauled sets reflecting what finished at Ipswich last night and whats required there on Monday morning. Platforms 1 to 3 are part of the possiession at Ipswich Station.

For possibly the millionth time RTT DOES NOT show booked traction it shows timing loads. Look at the 0900 and 1700 departures from Norwich in a normal day, booked 755 becuase it's the timing load, not the actual traction.

I know RTT doesn't however as 86246 observes
