The reason for the short notice is that this was originally meant to be a steam charter but had to be changed to diesel due to a loco failure. Carriages will be the RPSI Cravens set. A rare chance to travel on the Northern and Sligo lines by 071 class haulage.

Can't remember the last time an 071 (as distinct from 111) worked a passenger on the Northern Line. 076 worked the Gatwicks on the 9:35 Belfast in December 2007, apart from 072 rescuing a failed Enterprise set at Newry I can't think of any since then.

It's been a while anyway.

227+DD failed at Fairview on June 1st 2010 and was hauled back to Connolly with passengers by an 071. Probably 75 but this is unconfirmed

BREAKING NEWS ....... 6th June2012

Malahide Lions Club regret to announce that unfortunately we must cancel our planned excursion to Mullingar and Belvedere House.
This follows the non availability of a Steam Locomotive and its substitution with a Diesel 071 series.
These circumstances were beyond our control.
Unfortunately the Diesel alternative did not attract nor maintain sufficient public interest.
Thus the Railway Preservation Society and the Malahide Lions Club apologise for this inconvenience caused, particularly to families who were expecting a memorable Steam Trip and a family fun day at Belvedere House and grounds.
Refunds can be obtained from the Irish Rail Office, Malahide Railway Station.
Further information can be obtained from our email link on the Home Page.
Again sincere apologies.

Lions charter crowd mustn't like 071s!

Yeah, the general public doesn't seem to have the same grá for diesel trips as it would with steam, unless there's some novelty thrown in like the Mystery train. (I'm sure a recreation of the old 'Radio Trains' might be a draw too but not sure what the logistics of doing that now would be).

There's still the 'Mystery Train' on 23rd June for those looking for some Irish loco hauled action.
