Ok, I posted a thread on here about my neighbour which, although may have sounded threatening, was meant as a bit of a joke. It got wiped. However, we have had noisy neighbours during lockdown (drilling, hammering etc.) Has anyone else had problems like this during the lockdown period ?

One of my neighbours is gradually covering his garden in sheds, he is currently on the third extension. It looks ugly and of course there is noise. He also likes cutting metal...

On the other side I have some neighbours who don't work, they finally wake up around 11 or 12 and on a nice day will play ear splittering loud music through the windows.

Irritating isn't the word!

During the second lockdown (I was absent throughout the first) one of the neighbours would start carrying out noisy DIY not long after 08.00 most days. It would only last an hour or so, but it was not appreciated. However, that is nothing unusual around here: retired residents have a habit of starting mowing, strimming, etc. nice and early on a Sunday. Alternatively, on a day when it has been so hot that people stay inside, they wait until people decide it is time to sit in the garden with a drink in the cool of the evening. Then they start.

Just at the moment, forum activity is such that this thread is appearing immediately below the one on "The Nicola and Alex Show". Could they, perhaps, be connected? (as Private Eye correspondents often ask ;))

To be honest, I don't particularly notice daytime noise in the urban area I live in. It seems that for the last decade or so, there have always been at least two or three long running projects in the area, (e.g. house extensions) that come 8am on a weekday morning through to 4.30pm there's a cacophony of racket going on with various power tools whining, radios playing, skips being emptied, materials delivered etc. Similarly now the warmer weather is here we have regular operation of garden power tools 7 days a week at all times of the day by enthusiastic neighbours. Add in the two bin collections each week, regular supermarket deliveries / Amazon etc up and down the road at all hours (sometimes before 8 in the morning, and as late as 10 in the evening), I barely notice which neighbour is responsible for which particular racket that's going off - it's become general background noise to me as it's pretty much commonplace now!

Hopefully as lockdown eases further, we'll all be in our homes less and therefore: (a) making less noise; and (b) not having to sit about tolerating other people going about whatever business they see fit.

I think also, unless the source of noise is from behind a "party wall" in an adjoining property, then we start to notice noise more around this time of the year as people are outside more regularly, and in the house there are usually windows / doors open so obviously any external noise does become more noticeable.

However, I would be the first to object if some mindless moron was being antisocial with recreational noise late on at night. I've been lucky to avoid that - even when living as a student - whilst hearing many horror stories that others have endured.

I've had noisy neighbours, not just during lockdown, but for the past three or so years! Constant banging, smashing, screaming and arguing coming from the upstairs flat at least a few times every week at ridiculous times like 3 am!

My neighbour used to think she was Frank Sinatra, she screeched like a dying animal. Apparently people paid to hear that. Fortunately the time soon came for me to retire and move several counties away.

Did you have to go that far to get out of earshot?

I now have this "lovely" neighbour deciding to burn a large wooden shed he has pulled down any time the sun comes out !! Pity I can't repeat my original thread !!

My neighbours have had building work for 2 years now. It’s just an extension. In that time, developers have built a new apartment block in town.
It wouldn’t be so much of a problem if the neighbours were more considerate (I have talked to them in person about it, but can’t be bothered any more as they don’t care). Noisy work often starts about 7am, they put up no protection to stop dust and small bits of stone flicking onto my house. They’ve also had to take parts down and start again a few times.
Building work seems to follow me, as the 5 properties I’ve lived in over almost a decade has had major building work occurring next door.
I would quite like to live in a house a long way from anyone else someday...

On one side they're so quiet you'd not think they were there, on the other side next door moved in last year and are usually quiet too - apart from some redecorating when they moved in, a bit of work in the garden in the last few weeks, and some parties in the back yard last summer (in fairness, they weren't loud, and I'd usually been out to the pub so it wasn't like they were keeping me awake ... ). Next door but one on the same side seem to have been doing up their back garden for nearly a year now, also in the recent warm weather a loud stereo has been out, but only in the daytime.

Most of it's only stuff that I wouldn't notice if I weren't working from home (still at the point that any date given for return is a sure sign that a return won't happen on that date) , and less irritating/distracting than some of the people I'd have to deal with if I was in the office

Neighbours arent too bad. Though they are always going out but never for long. Out in the garden almost constantly so very little privacy when I'm in garden or Kitchen.

It's not personal. Seems that everyone these days wants to be extending their house all the time. It has become a national pastime, and reflected by the fact that Bob the Builder has entered the pantheon of children's cartoon characters alongside Postman Pat and Superman . We see and hear more of builders than postmen.

We had someone move in to a house across the road and the very next day builders turned up to start an extension. If they wanted a bigger house, why the heck didn't they buy one that was bigger to start with? To my relief they finished after about 6 months, on a Saturday; but at 7am the following morning (ie the Sunday, no kidding) I was woken up by loud crashes, to see a guy tossing scaffold poles from a lorry onto the pavement outside another nearby house, which then had an extension built over the following 6 months.

That was when I decided to escape to the country, but that is not quiet either. Half a mile away there is a clay pigeon shoot banging away on Sundays, a guy chainsawing firewood commercially 200 yards away, and endless passing convoys of motorbikes whenever the weather is fine. I don't mind the shoot so much, although most of its customers come from town, but the chainsawing could just as well be done on an industrial estate, and many of the motorbikes are so noisy (compared with others) that they must have deliberately modified the exhaust system to make it so.

I notice nobody is that irritating neighbour. :) When I was bookselling was always being told about friends not returning books that had been lent, but never came across anyone who'd admit to being a permanent 'borrower'!

Bank holiday Monday, so nice and early somebody starts intermittent hammering, interspersed with a bit of drilling. If it is coming from where I think it is coming from, he’s retired.

Moved here a year ago, soon got chatting to some friendly neighbours, they even gave me a welcome present. Great, thought I, made some friends already. They do not cause any trouble either, eleven months a year they are far away in their camping bus %)

My neighbours are decent, just mild irritations from dogs barking, children screeching for hours at a time whilst playing outside my house even though I live in a close and there is a playing field 50 meters away, and next door who has a car that thinks it is a lorry (has a reversing bleeper and he has to reverse to get out of the estate, BONG BONG BONG BONG BONG BONG BONG BONG every time he goes out somewhere). One irritation (again from next door) which is far less prevalent now is him revving the engine of his car which is some sort of specialist one. Years ago I had VROOOM VROOOM VROOOM VROOOM VROOOM for over an hour at a time sometimes, and I got the stench of exhaust fumes coming into the house.

Think they must have moved to somewhere near me. The noise often carries across from a street or two away. Not quite worked out yet whether it is a motorbike or classic car. :s
