A Voith T211-r transmission will happily freewheel at a speed higher than it can achieve under traction power. Think being towed on a pushbike, once you get too fast for your highest gear you can't provide any input but no damage will occur.

With the 153s on the Marches, it's not so much the top speed that makes the units struggle to keep to time, but their (many) other flaws. Slow to board through the narrow doors, slow release the brakes, slow to accelerate. A 150 will wipe the floor with a 153 despite having the same top speed.
