Distances

Burton - Tamworth: 13 miles
Tamworth - Nuneaton: 13 miles
Nuneaton - Leicester: 18.75 miles
Leicester - Kettering: 27.25 miles
Kettering - Corby: 4.5 miles
Leicester - Melton Mowbray: 15 miles
Melton Mowbray - Corby via Manton Junction: 25.75 miles (*)
Burton - Derby: 11 miles
Derby - Loughborough: 16.75 miles
Loughborough - Leicester: 12.5 miles
Loughborough - Corby via Sileby East Junction and Manton Junction: 43.25 miles (*)

* These mileages are missing from the NRT and are therefore obtained from railmiles. Previous communication with ATOC confirmed that these mileages should not have been omitted from the NRT.

Burton - Tamworth - Nuneaton - Leicester - Kettering - Corby: 76.5 miles
Burton - Tamworth - Nuneaton - Leicester - Melton Mowbray - Corby: 85.5 miles
Burton - Derby - Loughborough - Leicester - Kettering - Corby: 72 miles
Burton - Derby - Loughborough - Leicester - Melton Mowbray - Corby: 81 miles
Burton - Derby - Loughborough - Melton Mowbray - Corby: 71 miles

So the last one is the shortest route taken by any passenger service, however an argument could be made that the third route above is actually the shortest route by regular passenger services, depending on the definition of "regular".

Nottingham is currently not available to be used as a routeing point for Burton as there is currently no service on the relevent route.

From section F of NRG

All related stations are therefore associated with the nearest routeing point or routeing point group in each direction. A related station may have up to 4 associations. Sometimes a station has no scheduled passenger service to one of the routeing points to which it is related. These routeing points should be ignored.

Nottingham is not at present the nearest routeing point or routeing point group in any direction for which services exist.

And it is also said "Do not go to the routing elves for advice, for they will say both Yes and No"

with apologies to the late JRR Tolkien...

Now that I've stopped laughing.......

Through trains from Derby to or via Corby going via Melton Mowbray are thin on the ground, but if you are travelling at the right time of the day from Burton-upon-Trent it would be entirely reasonable to use that route, changing at Derby.

As can be seen from the postings above, it is the kind of thing that causes clouds of steam to emit from the routing guide. In such cases I would retire with a map and apply the old BR 'Any Reasonable' test.

i.e. YES

I just wanted to take in a trip to the National Brewing Centre with a trip over the Harringworth Viaduct and it seems a reasonable ticket to do them with (on spec that is, as it won't be a planned day out apart from getting to Derby in time for the through train).
