Hi so I am travelling from London to Nottingham this Sunday the 8th I have a opportunity to get a first class ticket however I never have travelled in first class on a train so I want to know if it is worth spending extra money to upgrade or should I stick to standard class?
I am looking to travel around lunch time so a meal service would be great.

You don't get anything apart from tea/coffee or water on EMR on a Sunday, and you have to pick it up yourself.

No great benefit on the train itself on EMR, but the lounge access may be good, depending upon the time you arrive before your train.

I thought all of EMR’s lounges were closed?
Nottingham's certainly is. On a Sunday LNER first class is miles better than EMR but LNER does have a warning on its website about industrial action effecting catering until the 9th. I don't think this Sunday is the best day to sample 1st class.

I haven't used EMR first on Sunday recently but there are no buffet cars on EMR anymore, it will still be at-seat service surely?

It's often worth it purely for the experience, but you won't get a meal on EMR on a Sunday. I'm not sure about LNER but I would say there won't be either. First Class is really at its peak on weekdays.

In normal times you would get some food, more snack than meal on a Sunday on LNER but strikes and Christmas means this isn't normal times. I wouldn't pay for first class on EMR on any Sunday and I don't think I would pay for LNER first class this Sunday.

Leicester's is closed too, I believe.

I suppose it depends how much it costs to upgrade, as some EMR tickets are sold out quickly in standard and then First becomes the cheaper option.

Even before Covid arrived on the scene EMR FC lounges were generally all weekday only, they have never reopened.

1st class is nicer on the 222s than standard class, especially when some of the seats on the 222s have collapsed cushions

If you want to sample first class I recomment choosing a weekday less affected by strikes. I haven't tried EMR, but LNER first class is lovely, especially if you find an IC225!

Yes, whatever class you go in, I would recommend aiming for an IC225 !

So Leeds services only?
If the OP only wants to go to Nottingham, then he shouldn’t need to go further than Grantham.

Indeed, travelling from Berwick to King’s Cross a few months ago, I made sure to change at York for a MkIV.

I think IC225's also work some of the stopping services south of York, but may be wrong!

You'll be able to see the planned timing loads on RTT (which I think are generally accurate for LNER?) and if you go through the process of trying to reserve a seat, it'll show you on the seat-picker which train is planned to operate which service (pending any last minute set swap!)

To be fair, as poor as 80x standard is, first is a really significant step up, and LNER catering is generally very good in my experience of it!

They usually work the 0906 KGX-YRK & 1202 return on weekdays.

It's a shame you've missed your chance to sample the GWR HST First Class - regarded for some time as the best on the network. You can sort of sample it with ScotRail and their HSTs, but sadly nowhere near where you'll be this weekend. Even so, I would still rate LNERs First Class experience higher than EMRs at the moment (Electric 80X vs 222 for example), but EMR will take you closer to where you want to go to without any changes.

Derby's is open just as a lounge with no complimentary drinks anymore.

On a Sunday on EMR you can grab a cuppa from the bar but that's all. Your effectively just paying for a bigger seat and a table. Mind you, it's only £12 onboard as I recall.

Thanks for the feedback!!
With your feedback, I have decided to travel back to Nottingham on Monday the 16th instead of this Sunday so I can get my first proper experience.
Is there anything I should know about travelling in first class with emr?

It’s worth knowing what you’ll be getting food wise. Breakfast is served cooked in the morning, but the rest of the day only has lighter food, e.g sandwiches. It used to be more extensive, and the tables all laid out with crockery looked lovely, as it is on LNER. As this is sadly no longer done (at least it wasn’t in August and I don’t believe it has been restarted), you’ll have to wait for staff to come round and prepare things, so don’t worry if there’s nothing as it will appear.

But other than that everything is pretty self explanatory, though I’ve seen a few people not understand that you need to lift the lever and slide yourself forward to recline the seat!

And if travelling back to Nottingham and you want cooked breakfast the last breakfast train is the 10:05 from St Pancras. You'll get hot drinks/soft drinks, crisps and biscuits as well as the cooked breakfast and staff are very attentive in my experience.

I usually find EMR staff very friendly and attentive and quite generous with the amount of refreshments they let you have. Plenty of hot drinks, fruit juices and bottled water available. Also biscuits, crisps, nuts and other snacks. The sandwiches are quite good quality but they are not always offered and you do sometimes have to ask for one. The last time I travelled on a Saturday morning from Nottingham to London orders were taken for bacon rolls very soon after leaving Nottingham. I was impressed that they were freshly made bacon rolls with nice bread and not something soggy in plastic that had been warmed up in the microwave.

First Class on EMR is perhaps often better than some people here admit to. With my Senior Railcard and a Super Off Peak Return being around £30 more than a Standard Class I always go First Class. That’s only around £15 extra each way with all the refreshments, with a more comfortable seat and usually no overcrowding, plus space to store my case it’s so less stressful.

Cooked breakfast these days on EMR means either Hot Bacon Roll (no butter) Vegan Sausage Roll (not tried it) or Porridge.

If you want a proper breakfast make sure you choose the right LNER service.

A few months ago, though the last time in First Class was in 2021. Have things changed there too?
Well, you won't find the tables laid out with crockery when you board. And that's been the case for many years.

I could have sworn...

Without meaning to go off-topic, does this mean that the only regular services with fully laid crockery are GWR's Pullmans? I can't think of any others.

If feel that first class after covid is only value for money when the first class ticket is not much higher than standard class.
