Isn't this an inaccurate route diagram?

That is a perfectly rational design.

If they showed Sunderland services as going through Doncaster on that diagram, then most people would expect the service to call there, which would cause of lot of problems for passengers.

So while it is geographically inaccurate, it is an accurate reflection of GC's service pattern and calling points, which is the more important message to convey.

It's purely a simplification for passengers rather than a geographically accurate map.

The London underground map is a prime example of simplification to non geographical locations to make it easier and more compact
